PART 3: Series and Parallel Circuits

Instructions: The diagram below shows the plan to install a neon sign for the Institute of Technology
building. A supply of 42 VDC is generated by the power supply. Answer the following questions below.

ITEC H
1. [5 pts] How will you connect the components in a series connection?

2. [10 pts] What will be the parameters (current, voltage, resistance, and power) of each
component if the circuit above is connected in series? (For the value of resistances,
use your student number, i.e., 2021-ITECH-MN-0. Use 10 if the digit is zero)
RT= 38 Ohms
IT= 1.105 A
PT= 46.41 W
P1= 9.77W
P2= 2.44W
P3= 10.99W
P4= 10.99W
P5= 12.2W
V1= 8.84V
V2= 2.21V
V3= 9.945V
V4= 9.945V
V5= 11.05V

3. [5 pts] How will you connect the components in a parallel connection?

4. [10 pts] What will be the parameters (current, voltage, resistance, and power) of each
component if the circuit above is connected in parallel? (For the value of resistances,
use your student number, i.e., 2021-HCETI-MN-0. Use 10 if the digit is zero)

RT= 1.055 Ohms

5. [10 pts] Compare the power of each connection. Which of the following connections is
better in terms of brightness? Explain your answer. (Assume that the brightness of
every bulb is dependent on the power consumed, i.e., it will shine more brightly if
more power is consumed.)
POWER PARALLEL SERIES
I 176.4W 12.2W
T 196W 10.99W
E 196W 10.99W
C 882W 2.44W
H 220.5W 9.77W

Given the table above with regards to the power of each of the letters by both parallel
and series circuit, we can see that the parallel connection consumes more power that
totals to 1672.04W compared to the consumed power of the series circuit that totals
to 46.41 W. With a big difference of 1625.63W that is in favor of the parallel
connection, we can therefore conclude that the lights of the parallel circuit, in terms
of brightness, shines brighter than the lights of the series circuit.
