DEMONSTRATION TEACHING LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 5

Quarter 1 – Week 5
(For COT 1 of RPMS S.Y 2020-2021)

I. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, the grade five pupils should be able to;
1. adds and subtracts fractions and mixed fractions without and with regrouping.
(M5NS-Ie-84)
2. enumerate the steps in adding and subtracting fractions and mixed fraction
3. share/cooperate with group members during activities regarding addition and
subtraction of fraction and mixed fraction.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Topic: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions and Mixed Fractions without and
with regrouping
Reference/s: K to12 MELC Grade 5 Mathematics, M5NS-Ie-84
Lesson Guide in Elementary Mathematics 5, pp.212-215
The New Mathematics Adventure 6 by Francisco B. Tabifranca Jr.
Materials: Egg ,PPT Presentations, Manila Papers, Strips of paper, Worksheet, charts
Value: Being cooperative, patience in solving problems

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Preparation/Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
2.  Prayer
3. Checking of Attendance
Teacher’s Activities Pupil’s Activities
B. Presentation/Lesson proper

1. Drill
(Egg Question Challenge):
I have here an egg. While the music is playing,
you will pass this egg around. If the music stops, the person
who is holding this egg will have to read a question and
answer it.
Yes we are!
Are you ready Grade V?
(Pupils will pass the egg around)
(Teacher will play the music)

2.Motivation

A man jogging in the park.

What can you see in the picture class?

Very Good! (pupils’ answers varies)

What else do you see?
Yes we did!
So, did you notice this man jogging?

This is Rodrigo. Every day he jogs at this park. One day, a

problem came up to his mind. Let us help him to solve his
problem.

3. Presentation
Rodrigo jogs regularly. He jogged 1/2 km then he
saw a friend. He jogged another 1 1/3 km then he stopped
for a while. How many kilometers have he jogged?
Yes sir!
Have you experienced jogging class?
(pupils answer differently)
What’s the longest distance you have jogged?
1/2 km
So based on the problem, How many km did Rodrigo travel
until he saw his friend?
1 1/3 km
After that, how many km did he jogged?
Yes/No Sir!
I want you to notice this two fractions here,
1/2 km and 1 1/3 km. Do you know what kind of fractions
are these?

Okay. We called this two fractions, Dissimilar Fractions.

(the teacher will show the meaning of Dissimilar Fraction) Dissimilar Fractions – are two or more fractions
with different denominators. Adding and subtracting
dissimilar fractions are different from adding and
Let’s have a group Activity: subtracting similar fractions.
Group Activity (5 minutes)
Arrange the strips of papers in correct order to
enumerate the steps in adding dissimilar fractions.

Use the Least Common Multiple of two denominators or

(LCD – Least Common Denominator) to write the
equivalent fractions. Each Group will read their work
List and Identify the Least Common Multiple of the
denominator of the two fractions.
When the two denominators are already similar, Add the
fractions like adding similar fractions and Reduce your
answer to lowest term.

(Present the correct order of the steps in adding dissimilar

fractions.)

1. List and Identify the Least Common Multiple of the

denominators of the two fractions.

2. Use the Least Common Multiple of two denominators or

(LCD – Least Common Denominator) to write the
equivalent fractions.

3. When the two denominators are already similar, Add the

fractions like adding similar fractions and Reduce your
answer to lowest term.
Okay, so now that you know the steps in adding dissimilar
fractions. Let’s find now the answer to the problem of
Rodrigo.

1. List and Identify the Least Common Multiple of the

denominators of the two fractions.

1
-- 2, 4 ,6 ,8 ,10, 12, 14 ,16 ,18, 20
2
1
1 -- 3, 6 ,9 ,12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30
3
2. Use the Least Common Multiple of two denominators
or (LCD – Least Common Denominator) to write the
equivalent fractions.
1 3
=
2 6
1 = 2
1 1
3 6
3. When the two denominators are already similar, Add the
fractions like adding similar fractions and reduce your
answer to lowest term.

3 2 5
km + 1 6 km
= = 1 6 km 5
6 Rodrigo Jogged 1 6 km.

So how many kilometers did Rodrigo Jogged?

teacher.
1. List and Identify the Least Common Multiple of the
denominator of the two fractions.
(One pair will solve the problem on the board.)

2. Use the Least Common Multiple of two denominators or (LCD

– Least Common Denominator) to write the equivalent fractions.

3. When the two denominators are already similar, add the

fractions like adding similar fractions and reduce your answer to
lowest term.
(Pupils will solve on the board))
4. Fixing Skills

Add or subtract the following Dissimilar Fractions.

Reduce your answer to lowest term if possible:
1) 2/4 + 3/10 =
2) 10/12 - ¼ =
3) 4/5 - 3/10 =
(Ask one pupil to answer one of each problem)
We follow the steps in adding and subtracting Dissimilar
Fractions:

1. List and Identify the Least Common Multiple of the

5. Generalization
denominator of the two fractions.
How do we add and subtract dissimilar fractions?
2. Use the Least Common Multiple of two denominators
or (LCD – Least Common Denominator) to write the
equivalent fractions.

3. When the two denominators are already similar, Add

the fractions like adding similar fractions and Reduce
your answer to lowest term.
6. Application (Pupils may answer on their own words or understanding)
Direction: Solve the word problem. Reduce your
answer to lowest term:
(One pupil will solve for the answer on the board)
Mother went to market to buy 3 1/6 kilos of ground beef and
12 1/5 kilos of ground pork. How many kilos of ground meat did
mother buy in all?

IV. EVALUATION:
Find the sum or difference of the following fractions. Solve on a sheet of pad paper.
1) 3/5 - 1/9 =
2) ½ + 5/8 =
3) 3 3/8 - 2 ¼ =
4) 6 1/3 + 3 1/12 =
5) 4 1/6 - 2 ¼ + 1/7 =

V. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR ENRICHMENT OR REMEDIATION:

Do addition of fractions along the path according to the arrows until you get to the end. You should get
to the same final answer.

2/5 + 1/4

+ +
1/2 5/12

+ 1/6
