Section 2 CLEARING & GRADING Page 3

1.0 GENERAL

The intent of this specification is to define the minimum requirement for Clearing
and Grading.

The Contractor shall execute grading for all areas within the required limits,
including excavation from borrow areas and/or disposal of surplus material,
spreading in layer with necessary compaction and or filling with acceptable material
from outside the plant area.

2.0 STANDARDS

All works shall be executed to relevant QCS (Qatar Construction Specification) and
British Standards as applicable.

3.0 CLEARING

Clearing shall consist of clearing the surface of the ground of the designated areas of
all undergrowth, debris and any rubbish of any nature, natural obstructions or such
material, which in the opinion of the Engineer, is unsuitable for the foundation of the
required structure. Dispose off all spoils materials resulting from the clearing
operation by removing to acceptable disposal areas on/off site designated by the
Engineer/local municipal authorities.

The Contractor is to familiarise himself with the existing condition at the site before
quoting to understand the involvement of work.

4.0 ROUGH GRADING

Grading shall be done to the specified grading levels in different areas as indicated
on the drawings. Grades not otherwise indicated shall be uniform levels or slopes
between points and existing finished grades. The work shall involve partly
excavation and partly fill, and materials obtained from excavation shall generally be
used for fill if permitted by the Engineer. Lumps larger than 150 mm in size shall be
broken down to use in fill if permitted by the Engineer, or otherwise be disposed off
along with any organic material obtained from excavation.

Any shortfall in fill is to be obtained from borrow areas to be designated by the

Engineer. Sub-base for the roads including shoulders shall be a suitable material
acceptable to the Engineer.

Surplus and disposable materials are to be spread in disposal areas, trimmed and
levelled in such a manner so as not to interfere with the drainage of the area and be
acceptable to the Engineer.

Section 2 CLEARING & GRADING Page 4

Filled areas shall be laid in layers not exceeding 150 mm in loose thickness and shall
be compacted by smooth-drum vibratory rollers of 10 tonne minimum static weight;
the frequency of vibration between 20 to 30 cps is expected to result in desired
compaction. Grading under roads and paving shall be carried to the sub-grade of the
base course, removing all large stones and debris, grading and compacting uniformly
to the correct lines and levels for receiving the paving or slab. All areas of
unsuitable sub-grade material and areas where rock is encountered shall be
excavated to a minimum depth of 300 mm below sub-grade, or to such depth as the
Engineer may designate. The portion so excavated shall be refilled with suitable
selected material as acceptable to the Engineer in a manner as stated above.

Depending on the percentage of fines, each layer shall be compacted to 80% average
relative density (72% minimum) as per BS or 95% of maximum modified dry
density. Potable water shall be added as required to achieve the desired compaction.

Field density test shall be done as per BS 1377. For every 1000 square meter of any
layer compacted, or such smaller area as may work at any time, field density and the
moisture content shall be determined. Compaction shall be considered as part of
grading work.

5.0 COMPACTION OF EXISTING GRADE

Before start of the grading work, the above areas are to be checked for the existing
degree of compaction. In case the compaction is less than above specified, the areas
are to the compacted. Where such areas were filled in the previously done work, the
fill materials are to be excavated if required and re-laid in the manner as described
above.

6.0 FINISH GRADING

During implementation of the project works, the rough grading is likely to be

disturbed. On progressive completion of work in different areas, the final ground
levels are to be finished to the final grade levels as shown on the drawings, by
minimum 10 centimetres of crushed lime stone dressing of single size 20mm stone
to BS 882 requirements on areas not covered by buildings or pavements.
