1.0 GENERAL
The intent of this specification is to define the minimum requirement for furnishing
and installation of all miscellaneous metalwork in accordance with this
specification.
The work includes, but is not necessarily limited only to the miscellaneous metal-
works listed below:
Further, BS 449 Standard Specification for Structural steel and all relevant BS
Standards as included for structural steelwork apply or any other equivalent codes,
subject to review of the Engineer shall apply.
Before fabrication of any miscellaneous metal is started, the contractor shall submit
shop drawings for review to the Engineer. The Contractor shall furnish complete
setting out and fabrication drawings for all miscellaneous metal. These drawings
shall include all details of miscellaneous metal required to complete this section of
work. Material fabricated or delivered to the site before review of shop drawing
shall be subject to rejection by the Engineer.
4.0 MATERIALS
All materials shall be the best of their respective kinds, free from all imperfections
that will impair their strength, durability and appearance. All materials shall meet
the current applicable specifications of QCS and BS. All material shall be well
finished bars, plates, strips, angles, rolled sections, extruded sections, pipes, etc., as
required and specified, clean and free from mill scale, flake, rust pitting. Cast iron
shall be soft, rough grey iron. Accessories for connection of cast iron shall be of
steel unless otherwise noted. Materials required or indicated to be galvanised, shall
be so treated after fabrication. All miscellaneous metal work shall be protected
against corrosion using suitable paints and other means as accepted by the Engineer
and as specified in the chapter on painting.
5.0 WORKMANSHIP
Ferrous and non-ferrous materials shall be well formed to shape and size, with sharp
lines and angles. Shearing and punching shall leave clean, true lines and surfaces.
Shop connections shall be bolted or welded. Field connections shall be bolted or
welded in accordance with the best practice. Fastening shall be countersunk into
exposed work and finished works, except as otherwise required. Screws shall not be
used where avoidable. All mitred corners shall be ground after shop welding. Joints
and intersections shall be accurately made, in true planes, with adequate fastenings.
Bolted work shall be screwed up tight and threads nicked to prevent loosening,
except those miscellaneous metal items to be removable or portable, and shall have
lock or split washers. Joints exposed to weather shall be watertight.
Casting shall be free from warp or defects that impair their strength or appearance.
Exposed surfaces shall have smooth finish and well defined, sharp lines and arises.
Joints shall be milled to a close fit. The Contractor shall perform all shop
requirements of cutting, drilling, tapping and fitting to accommodate other work
coming in contact with or passing through these materials. He shall also ascertain
and take particular care that all holes, cutouts, etc. have been provided as no claim
for extra payment on this account will be considered or allowed.
All structural fabrication work shall conform to provisions of the relevant QCS and
British Standards as listed in specification for `Structural Steelwork'.
The Contractor shall furnish complete GI pipes and sockets toe channels, angles and
plates etc. as required. Channels and angles shall be fabricated of structural shapes.
Intersecting corners of toe channels and angles shall be mitred.
Two-way pattern chequered plate, to match stair tread, chequered plate, for floors
and platforms shall be of minimum 8mm thickness and designed as per load
requirements. Generally wherever heavy-duty floors are required the chequered
plates shall be designed for an imposed load of 10kN/m2. For normal floors the
chequered plate floors shall be designed for an imposed load of 5kN/m2. Where
chequered plates are required to be removable, no single plate shall weigh more than
55kg. Chequered plates that are to be removable shall be provided with two lifting
holes, and size of plates shall be such as to afford easy handling. Other plate shall be
provided with fasteners as required. All plates shall rest flat on their supports
without rocking. All edges of plates shall be ground or cut smooth and straight with
3mm clearance between plates. Unsupported chequered plate will be stiffened with
angles where required for loading. Cutouts and openings required for chequered
plate shall be shop formed and reinforced to dimensions and locations as required by
the Engineer. Banding strip or angle for openings required to be cut out in the field
shall be furnished. All other necessary accessories for chequered plate required for
field installation shall be furnished. Where chequered plate is required to be
furnished with grating, it shall be securely shop welded.
6.4 GRATINGS
Steel gratings shall be welded type rectangular pattern of sizes as required. Bearing
bars shall be 30mm on centres, unless otherwise noted, and twisted or spiralled cross
bars not more than 100mm on centres. The minimum thickness of load bearing bars
shall be 3mm for indoor and dry condition, and 5mm for corrosive and damp
situations, for both outdoor and indoor applications. All the shop drawings shall be
reviewed by the Engineer before execution. Interior gratings shall be shop painted
and exterior gratings shall be hot dip galvanised after fabrication. All gratings are to
be bolted or clipped to their supports to allow for removability. Sizes of grating
shall be such as to afford easy handling and removability. Neat circular or square
openings shall be cut for the passage of pipes, ducts, etc., through grating. Such
openings shall have 50mm clearance for bare and insulated pipes and ducts at all
points. Bank all openings with 150mm x 6mm steel plate curbs welded to each
intersecting member of the grating. Do all necessary cutting and fitting in the field.
Provide toe plates at all unprotected open sides at end of grating. Sizes and
locations of openings shall cater to the Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and
Special process requirements.
Steel lintels shall be provided for all opening dimensions for rolling steel doors. A
minimum of three adjustable anchors shall be provided per frame jambs as required
when built into masonry. Anchors shall be fabricated from 6mm x 100mm steel
flats extending 300mm into mortar joints to floor by steel angle clips. All frames
shall be neatly mitred at corners, securely full welded and ground flush. All
necessary field bolts, clips, etc., for frames and lintels shall be provided.
Frames, Covers and Gratings for manholes and catch basins shall be of heavy-duty
casting. Iron casting shall conform to ASTM A 48, Class 20. All casting shall be
true to pattern in form and dimension, free from faults, sponginess, cracks,
blowholes, and other defects affecting their strength. Bearing surfaces between cast
frames, covers and grates shall be machined, fitted together and match marked to
prevent rocking.
