GLASS AND GLAZING

1.0 GENERAL

The intent of this specification is to define the minimum requirement for the
furnishing and installation of all glass and glazing work in accordance with the
drawings and as specified herein.

2.0 CODES AND STANDARDS

Latest editions of Codes, Specifications and Standards of the issues listed below, but
referred to thereafter by basic designation only, form a part of this specification to
the extent indicated by the references thereto. As a minimum, all works should also
conform Latest edition of the BS and, equivalent 'Indonesia Government
Specifications and Codes of Practice' of the issues listed below. In the event of
conflicts and discrepancies between this specification and the referenced codes,
specifications or standards, the more stringent applicable requirement shall govern.

BS 952 Part 1 Glass for glazing - classification


BS 6262 Codes of practice for glazing for buildings
BS 952 Part 2 Glass for glazing – Terminology for work on glass

2.1 DEVIATIONS

It is the intent of this specification to establish acceptable standards of quality and


performance. Minor deviations in details due to manufacturer's standard shop
process will be considered for acceptance provided that, in the opinion of the
Engineer, the proposed substitutions are equal in quality and performance to the
specified material. All deviations shall be called out in writing in the proposal and
shall be specifically indicated on the shop drawings.

2.2 HANDLING AND STORAGE

The Contractor shall exercise great care to ensure that the glass is not damaged in
handling. Glass shall be stored under cover in a vertical position in storage racks.

3.0 MATERIALS

3.1 GENERAL
All materials shall be new and of a type and quality to meet the requirements
specified herein. All materials shall be delivered to the jobsite in original packages
bearing the manufacturer's labels intact. Glass shall be of the type, quality and
substance complying with BS 952 Part I Table 1.

3.2 TOUGHENED GLASS


Where toughened glass is indicated, it shall be 6mm thick as indicated on the
drawings.

3.3 INSULATING GLASS

Insulating glass shall be composed of two sheets of glass with an air space between,
and sealed edges. Glass minimum thickness shall be 6mm. Air space shall be 12
mm. Total minimum thickness of unit shall be 24mm. Glass for use on the exterior
of the buildings shall be thickness required to withstand the design wind pressure
when set in the sizes shown on the drawings.

3.4 TEMPERED INSULATING PLATE GLASS


Tempered plate glass, for use in aluminium exterior entrance ways, and transoms
shall be 19mm thick "solar-bronze" glass.

3.5 CLEAR PLATE GLASS

Clear plate glass for use in interior shall be 4mm, 6mm or 10mm nominal thickness
glazing quality, polished on both sides (glazing grade GG).

3.6 OBSCURED GLASS

Obscured glass shall be rough cast glass to an accepted pattern and shall be 4mm or
6mm thick as indicated on the drawings.

3.7 GLAZING

Glazing shall be in accordance with BS 6262. Glazing to timber doors and frames
shall have all rebates in timber cleaned and primed prior to glazing. Edges of glass
shall be bedded in imitation wash leather strips of accepted colour and manufacture.

3.8 MIRRORS

Mirror shall be silvered 6mm clear float glass complying with BS 952.

Silvering shall be one side only and shall be protected with an electrocopper
backing, Shellac varnish and paint.

Mirrors shall be delivered to site cut to size and drilled for fixing. All exposed glass
edges shall be ground smooth and bevelled to the acceptance of the Engineer.
Mirror shall be with wooden frame.
Mirror shall be countersunk drilled for and fixed with a minimum of four cover head
screws with 15mm diameter detachable screw covers.

3.9 GLAZING COMPOUNDS AND PREFORMED GLAZING SEALANTS


Compounds shall be of suitable type accepted for the application and, except as
otherwise specified in British Standards. The use of non-skimming compounds,
non-resilient type preformed impregnated type gaskets will not be permitted. Metal
sash putty will not be permitted. Materials used with aluminium frames shall be
aluminium coloured, non-staining, and not requiring painting. Other materials
which will be exposed to view and unpainted shall be gray or neutral colour.

Channel glazing compound shall be equal in performance to, but not limited to the
following:

(a) Non-drying, knife grade polybutene sealant


(b) One-part acrylic terpolymer sealant conforming to British Standards as
applicable.

3.10 GLAZING ACCESSORIES

Provide glazing accessories as required to supplement the major glazing materials to


provide a complete installation, including glazing points, clips, shims, angles, beads,
setting blocks and spacer strips.

Ferrous metal accessories which will be exposed in the finished work shall have a
finish that will not corrode or stain while in service.

Glass setting tape, when used, shall be an accepted non-oxidizing, non-migrating,


non-corrosive extruded polybutane adhesive type.

Setting blocks and spacers shall be of neoprene. Shore durometer hardness of


setting blocks shall be 60 to 70, and of spacers shall be 40 to 50.

Wedges or shims shall be cork or neoprene, or other accepted material.

Glazing angles for setting wire glass in metal sash, when applicable, shall be
continuous underwriters accepted type. Other glazing angles shall be of metal
electrolytically compatible with the metal of the glazing rebates.

4.0 SAMPLES AND EXTRA GLASS

Three samples of each type of glass and glazing compound proposed for use shall be
submitted for review. Materials used shall be identical to reviewed samples.

Extra amount of glass, at a minimum rate of 10 percent of each type of glass


specified, shall be provided to account for breakage during shipping, handling and
erection.

5.0 INSTALLATION

5.1 GENERAL

The sizes to provide the required edge clearance shall be determined by measuring
the actual opening to receive the glass. Sheet glass shall be cut and installed with
the visible lines or waves running with the horizontal dimensions. Labels shall be
left in place until the installation is accepted.

5.2 GLASS SETTING

Items to be glazed shall be field glazed, using glass of the type, quality and
thickness indicated and specified. Preparation of surrounds and glazing, unless
otherwise specified, shall be in accordance with the details and general conditions
governing glazing in the FGMA glazing manual.

Aluminium windows may be glazed in conformance with one of the glazing


methods described in the standards under which they are produced. Beads or stops,
which are furnished with the items to be glazed, shall be used to secure the glass in
place.

Sills and finished surfaces shall be protected against stains resulting from dropping
of glazing compounds.

6.0 REPAIR AND CLEANING

Broken panes shall be replaced and defective workmanship shall be corrected before
acceptance of work.

After acceptance by the Engineer, all labels and loose or stray glazing compounds
shall be removed from both sides of all panels of glass. Compound droppings shall
be removed from sash, frames, doors, sills and floors.

Both sides of all panels shall be washed and cleaned thoroughly after compound has
set.

All rubbish and debris resulting from the performance of the work shall be removed.
