damaging adjacent structures, using methods complying with the requirements of SNI 1729-
2015 (Indonesian Steel Structures Code) for materials, construction, fabrication and erection,
and the AISC Code of Standard Practice which form an integral part of this specification.
03 APPROVED SUBCONTRACTORS
Requirement: The proposed fabricator, shop detailer and other specialist subcontractors shall
be specified and reviewed by the Employer’s Representative during the tender submission.
04 INSPECTION
Notice: Give a minimum of 1 working days notice so that inspection may be made at the
following stages:
05 IDENTIFICATION
Marks: Provide suitable and sufficient marks or other means for identifying each member, and
for the correct setting out, location, erection and connection of the steelwork. Mark bolted
connections to show the bolting category.
2 QUALITY CONTROL
01 CONTRACTOR'S DOCUMENTS

of each assembly, component and connection, together with information relative to fabrication,
surface treatment and erection, including the following:
- Identification.
- Steel type and grade.
- Dimensions of items.
- Required camber, where applicable.
- Fabrication methods including, where applicable, hot or cold forming and post weld heat
treatment.
- Location, type and size of welds or bolts.
- Weld categories and bolting categories.
- Orientation of members.
- Location of temporary connections.

- Procedures necessary for shop and site assembly.
- Lifting and support points for handling and transport.
- Temporary bracing, if required for handling and transport.
- Required fixings for adjoining building elements.
- Procedures for erection including temporary bracing.
Number of copies: For each drawing, supply not less than four copies in the form of prints on
paper.
Shop drawings shall be thoroughly checked by the Contractor for completeness and for
compliance with the Contract Documents before submitting them to the Employer’s
Representative and shall bear the Contractor’s stamp of approval certifying that they have been
checked. Shop drawings submitted without this stamp of approval and certification, and shop
drawings which, in the Employer’s Representative’s opinion are incomplete, contain numerous
errors or have not been checked or only checked superficially, will be returned unchecked by
the Employer’s Representative for resubmission.
The drawings shall show, in standard Engineering drawing manner, clear and complete details
of each assembly, component and connection of the work, together with all information,
including cambers, relative to their fabrication, surface treatment and erection.
In checking shop drawings the Contractor shall verify dimensions and site conditions and shall
check and co-ordinate the shop drawings of any section or trade with the requirements of other
sections or trades whose work is related thereto, as required for proper and complete
installation of the work. Corrections required by the Employer’s Representative shall be made
and the shop drawings resubmitted until permission is given for their use.
The Engineer’s drawings shall be read in conjunction with the Architects drawings and all other
relevant drawings and provision made for fixings noted therein.
Drawings will not be checked dimensionally for correctness of holes and cleats to suit other
building trades. Drawings rejected by the Employer’s Representative shall be corrected and re-
submitted before fabrication and shall not constitute a claim for extension of time or extra cost.
Shop drawings shall be submitted suitably identified and in orderly sequence to cause no delay
to the works. Drawings submitted shall correspond to the size of the contract drawings where
practicable. The Engineers member tagging system to be included on shop drawings for
checking purposes.
Requirement : At the time of tender submit sample shop drawings of another project as
evidence of capability.
Fabrication: Do not commence fabrication until permission to use the relevant shop drawings
has been obtained.
Fabrication: Do not commence fabrication until permission to use the relevant shop drawings
has been obtained.
3 MATERIALS
4 FABRICATION
01 FABRICATION
Splicing: Provide structural members in single lengths unless otherwise required or approved.
Availability: If steel members are not available in the section, grade or length specified, obtain
approval from the Employer’s Representative before substituting other sections or grades.
Natural camber: If beam members have a natural camber within the straightness tolerance,
fabricate and erect them with the camber up.
Site work: Other than work shown on the shop drawings as site work do not fabricate structural
steel on site without prior approval from the Employer’s Representative.
02 WELDING
Site welds: Other than site welds, shown on the shop drawings, do not weld on site without
prior approval from the Employer’s Representative. Wherever possible locate site welds in
positions for down hand welding.
03 BOLTING
Foundation bolts: Supply each foundation bolt with 2 nuts and 2 oversize washers. Provide
sufficient thread to permit the leveling nut to be set below the base plate.
Lock nuts: Provide lock nuts for bolts in moving parts or parts subject to vibration and for
vertical bolts in tension.
04 TOLERANCES
The tolerance limits for cross-section, straightness and length given in AS4100 Clause 14.4 (or
other approved equivalent standard) shall be satisfied after fabrication is completed and any
corrosion protection has been applied. Except where noted the tolerance on all structural
dimensions shall be +/- 2mm.
5 ERECTION
01 ERECTION
Temporary connections: Do not attach cleats without prior approval except as shown on shop
drawings. Remove temporary connections on completion and restore the surface.
Anchor bolts: For each group of anchor bolts provide a template with setting out lines clearly
marked for positioning the bolts when casting in.
Hand flame cutting: Do not hand flame cut bolt holes without prior approval.
Grouting at supports: Before grouting, the space between the base plate and the concrete
shall be washed, blown dry, inspected and approved. Do not grout if the temperature of the
base plate or the footing surface exceeds 38oC, where indicated on the drawings, higher
strength grout shall be used.
Anchors: If anchors are required or proposed for the support or fixing of structural steel submit
evidence of the anchor capacity to carry the required load. All anchors shall be tested in
accordance with the manufactures specification and satisfaction. The table below indicates the
amount of anchors to be tested, for each anchor type.
02 TOLERANCES
All members shall be erected, fixed, adjusted and maintained in 9in their intended vertical lateral
alignment and level. Members that do not meet the requirements of AS4100 Clause 15.3 (or
other approved equivalent standard) shall be liable to rejection.
6 FINISHES
01 SURFACE PREPARATION
Steel surfaces generally (including surfaces not otherwise treated, and contact surfaces
with concrete encasement or grout): Remove loose millscale, loose rust, oil, grease, dirt,
globules of weld metal, weld slag and other foreign matter. Ensure surfaces are dry.
Marking: On the contact surfaces of friction type joints, confine the use of marking ink to the
minimum necessary for marking hole positions.
Field connections: After completing the connection, prepare the surface of the connection,
adjacent unprimed surfaces and surfaces damaged during erection.
Abrasive Blast Cleaning: Do not use silica abrasive for dry blasting. Use phosphate inhibitors
when wet blasting.
02 PROTECTIVE COATINGS
Requirement: Prepare the steel surfaces and apply the primer or protective system before
delivery to the site.
Transport & Handling: Do not handle or transport steel members until the paintwork is dry.
Protect the paintwork from damage during transport and handling.
Priming:
Priming means the first coat of the specified paint system, including both decorative and
protective coating systems.
Time delay: Prime steel surfaces as soon as possible after surface preparation, and in any
case within 4 hours for shop work and 2 hours for field work, and prior to any deterioration of the
surface.
Fast drying primers: Do not use fast drying primers where surface preparation is less than
removal of all millscale and rust by power tooling or abrasive blasting.
Concrete encasing: Where members are part concrete encased extend the priming 25 mm
into the surface to be encased.
Inaccessible surfaces: Where surfaces will be in contact or near contact after fabrication or
erection, apply the finish and allow it to dry before assembly.
03 GALVANIZING
Coating quality: The zinc coating shall be free from lumps, blisters, gritty areas, uncoated
spots, acids and black spots, dross, flux and other imperfections.
Distortions: Members distorted during the hot dip galvanizing process shall be straightened by
a permitted method and made to conform to its shape, size and condition, without cracking or
otherwise damaging the member and/or its coating the Contractors expense.
Venting and Draining: The shop detailer and fabricator is to provide adequate preparation for
venting and draining during galvanizing.
Damaged Galvanizing: Make good with Remba ZINCFIX galvanizing repair or approved
equal.
