Lesson Introduction [Timing: 5 Mins]
Do you think there is a way to simplify very long and big numbers such as
98600000000000000? Let students to think for 2 minutes and then share their views
[pop up] and then introduce the topic: Scientific notation with large numbers
Lesson Development [Timing: 20 Mins]
✓ Large numbers are difficult to compare
e.g 2, 000, 000, 000 and 4, 000, 000, 000
✓ Scientific notation was developed to write numbers
✓ Written as a product of a multiplier and a power of 10

m × 10a where 1 ≤ m < 10

e.g. 200 = 2 × 102
5, 000, 000 = 5 × 106
3,200,000 = 3.2 × 106
1, 84,719.56 = 1.8471956 × 105
✓ Comparing scientific notations
1) When the power of 10 is different
E.g. 2 × 109 or 5 × 106
109 > 106, 2 × 109 is greater (compare the power of 10)
2) When the power of 10 are same
E.g 3.2 × 109 or 9 × 109
3.2 < 9, so 9 × 109 is greater (Compare the multiplier)

Student Activity [Timing: 10 Mins]

Let students to solve the following question individually and then correct their
solutions.
Which number is greater?
a) 5.6 × 107 or 9.5 × 106
b) 1.08 × 104 or 8.01 × 104
c) 22 billion or 1096 millions

Monitoring/ Follow-up Activity [Timing: 10 Mins]

Write in scientific notation:
a) 20,000
b) 168,000,000
c) 0.31 millions
Lesson Closure [Timing: 5 Mins]
Summarize the lesson taught and then assign question 1, 2, 5 & 6 from practicing and
applying as a homework [Page 17]
