Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the methods and procedures of securing and analyzing the data. It includes
the research design, research instrument and data gathering procedure.

Research Design
The researcher used quantitative particularly descriptive survey and qualitative phenomenological
research design. The descriptive survey research utilizing a Tertiary Data particularly the Difficulties and
Coping Mechanism of Children from Broken Families.

Locale of the Study


This study was conducted at Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology Main
Campus (CFCST) situated at Doroluman Arakan, North Cotabato.

Respondents of the study


The respondents of this study were the 10 BEED students and 5 BSE-Filipino from College of
Education.

The instrument
The main instrument used in this study was conducted interview questionnaire to gather the
needed information. This questionnaire was validated by the research panel.

Data Gathering Procedure


Letter of permission was made and signed by the researcher, research adviser, and the research
chairman. The letter was sent to the office of DEAN of College of Education.
After seeking the respondents’ permission and willingness to participate to capture the essence of
the phenomenon under investigation, they were given survey questionnaire. To elicit the natural responses
for questions, all the respondents were interviewed in locations of their own choice and lasted for at least
3 to 5 minutes per respondents. The respondents were informed that there is no right or wrong answers.
They were advised to answer the questionnaire as their feeling or emotion based on the statements. They
were given also the assurance that their answers will be kept confidential and it would be for research
purposes only. It was analyzed and subjected for statistical treatments.

Sampling Method
Purposive sampling was used by the researcher as a sampling procedure in this study.

Statistical Treatment and Data


The researcher used frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation as statistical tools in the
treatment of the data. Percentage was used to determine the percentile of the respondents based on their
demographic profile. Mean and standard deviation were used in the problems two (2) and three (3)
Person-r was used to identify the relationship between difficulties and coping mechanism.
