ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my special gratidude to
my teacher Mrs . Poonam Rao maam as well as
our principal who gave me the opportunity to do
the project on the topic “TO STUDY THE FACTOR ON
WHICH THE SELF-INDUCTANCE OF A COIL DEPENDS BY
OBSERVING THE EFFECT OF THIS COIL , WHEN PUT IN
SERIES WITH A RESISTOR/(BULB) IN A CIRCUIT FED UP BY
AN A.C SOURCE OF ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY
”.
This helped me to do some research and I came
to know about so many things.
Secondly, I would like to thank my family and
my friends who helped me to complete the
project within the limited time frame. Above all
I would like to thank god for his blessings and

APPARATUS AND MATERIALS

REQUIRED:- AC source of adjustable
frequency, connecting wires , an electricbulb or
resistor , rheostat , AC ammeter , an one-way
key, soft iron rod , a coil of large turns and a
piece of sand paper.
THEORY/PRINCIPLE:- Self-Inductance
Self-Inductance is the property of a coil by virtue of
which the coil opposes any change in the strength of
current flowing through it by inducting an emf in
itself. The induced emf is given by
Induced emf , e = - LdI /dt
where , e is induced emf , DI / dt is rate of change
of current through the coil and L is the self-
inductance of the coil.
Self-Inductance , L = µ0µrN2A/l
where , µr = relative permeability of magnetic
material , µr = µ/µ0
N = total number of turns in the coil.
A=area of cross-section of the coil.
l= length of the coil .
Thus, the self-inductance of the coil depends upon
the following factors
• Number of turns (N) in the coil
• Length of the coil
• Area of cross section of the coil
• Permeability of material of the coil\
• Shape of the coil
Inductor and resistor (or Bulb) in Series
Combination
When an inductor is connected in series with a
resistor /bulb with a variable source of
frequency ,then the current flowing in the bulb is
given by
Ims =Ems/Z
where , Z is impedance of the AC circuit and is
given by
Impedance ,Z=(R2+W2L2)1/2
where ,R= resistance of the bulb
L= self-inductance of the coil
angular frequency of AC source = 2πf
The brightness of the bulb is due to heat generated in
the bulb.So,
Heat generated ,H =I 2rms Zt
Power developed ,P=H/t= I 2rms Z
= I 2rms(R2+W2L2)1/2
PROCEDURE
Setting up the elements in a circuit
1. Before using the connecting wires clean their
ends with the help of sand paper.
2.Connect all the components as shown in the
circuit diagram.
3.Switch off the key K by pulling out the plug
from it.
4.Note the least count and zero error of AC
ammeter.
5.Switch on the AC supply and insert the plug
into the key.
6.Maintain the constant current in the circuit by
using the rheostat Rh.
When AC Source of 60 Hz
7.Consider the frequency of source to be 60 Hz
and voltage be 6 V.
8.Note the reading of current in AC ammeter
and observe the brightness of the bulb.
9.Put a soft iron inside the inductor core and
note the reading of current in AC ammeter and
check the brightness of the bulb again. This time,
the current in AC ammeter and brightness of
bulb are decreased.
When AC Source of 50 Hz
10.Now switch OFF the supply and decrease the
frequency of AC source say 50 Hz.
11.Again switch ON the supply and adjust the
same constant voltage 6V by using the variable
resistor or rheostat.
12.Note reading of current in the ammeter and
brightness of the bulb. The current and
brightness both are increased.
13.Insert an iron rod in the core of coil again
and record the current and brightness . The
current and brightness both are decreased.
14.Repeat the steps (10) to (13) by adjusting the
frequency of AC source such as 40 Hz ,30 Hz
and 20 Hz.
OBSERVATION
1. Least count of ammeter = .......A
2.Zero error of ammeter =.......A
3.Range of ammeter = 0 to .......A
