Prompt 2
Question 1:
How does Chidester trace the processes through which colonized populations were deemed to
lack “any trace of religion”? How does Chidester trace the processes through which colonized
people were deemed to “possess religion”? What processes were at work as colonizers made
both these attributions in relation to colonized populations? Finally, How does Chidester
analogize a) the way resources are extracted from colonized populations and b) the way theorists
such as Muller produced knowledge-claims about colonized populations? (20 points)
Question 2a:
What does Bell mean when she says that for performance theorists “religious life [is] more than a
functional expression of conceptual beliefs or social relations”? Keeping in mind our model for
“naturalizers” (___/___) what kinds of assumptions about religion, about the relationship
between mind/body, between thought/action, are performance theorists looking to challenge and
side-step? Use examples from Bell’s text or from class (in relation to the kinds of phenomena
performance theorists are interested in examining) to make your case.
Question 2b:
What is Geertz’s notion of thick description? How is it different from thin description? Use
examples to clarify your answer. Link your analysis with Geertz’s claims about where meaning
is located and how an anthropologist of religion is like a doctor and not a physicist. (20 points for
2a and 2b)
