WHAT DO WE FIND IN A MEDIATION TASK?

-CONTEXT: a situation is described where there’s a person with some specific

needs and characteristics, and needs your help. This can be because the person
doesn’t understand some given information, or they don’t have access to it.

-INPUT: it contains information related to that person’s needs. It can also contain
inadequate information that doesn’t apply to those needs. The input can be of
different types: infographic, photo, text, audio, ...

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE TASK?

The student has to handle the information in two ways:

1. MANAGING THE INFORMATION (GESTIÓ DEL CONTINGUT): the student

has to select the necessary information from the input and adapt it to the
person’s needs. In order to adapt it well, the student must justify the choice
they made from that input.

2. TRANSMITTING THE INFORMATION (TRANSMISSIÓ DEL CONTINGUT):

to do it well, all this is important:

-the task must be clear

-it must be well-structured
-the student must paraphrase the information from the input
-the student can extend information from the input
-the use of language and accuracy must be appropriate for the level.

TYPES OF MEDIATION TASKS

1. Written and oral

2. Interlinguistic (different languages involved) or intralinguistic (same
languages)
TIPS TO DO A GOOD MEDIATION TASK

1. Before you start writing, underline the most important information from the
situation given, so that you know what to choose from the input.

2. Apart from selecting the relevant information and transmitting it in the right
way, make sure you justify why you chose it.

3. Don’t copy the exact words from the text. Paraphrase and use synonyms.

4. Don’t give your opinion unless they ask you. Don’t explain personal
anecdotes, stick to the text and transmit it. Remember you’re simply a
mediator.

5. Use the right register. If you’re writing to a friend, don’t use formal
connectors or expressions, use informal language.

6. Try to respect the word limit. Go straight to the point, stick to the task,
without writing long introductions. Mediation is not a writing task.
