Electric charges and Fields, Practice Assignment I

April 15, 2022

1. Draw the electric field lines of the following system:

(a) a positive point charge

(b) a negative point charge
(c) a pair of two negative charges
(d) a dipole
2. A charged metallic sphere A is suspended by a nylon thread. Another charged metallic sphere B held by an
insulating handle is brought close to A such that the distance between their centres is 10 cm. The resulting
repulsion of A is noted. Spheres A and B are touched by uncharged spheres C and D respectively. C and D are
then removed and B is brought closer to A to a distance of 5.0 cm between their centres. What is the expected
repulsion of A on the basis of Coulomb’s law? Spheres A and C and spheres B and D have identical sizes. Ignore
the sizes of A and B in comparison to the separation between their centres. (NCERT)

3. Define electric flux. Write its SI unit. A point charge +10 µC is a distance 5 cm directly above the centre of a
square of side 10 cm. What is the magnitude of the electric flux through the square?
4. Consider a uniform electric field E = 3 × 103 N/C i.
(a) What is the flux of this field through a square of 10 cm on a side whose plane is parallel to the yz plane?
(b) What is the flux through the same square if the normal to its plane makes a 600 angle with the x-axis?
5. Using symmetry arguments, prove that the field due to infinite uniformly charged sheet must be perpendicular
to the surface of the sheet.
6. A semicircular ring of radius R is placed in the yz with its centre at (0,0,0). The charge density at a point on
the ring is given by
λ = λ0 sin ϕ
where ϕ is the angle made by the position vector of the point with the x axis.

(a) plot the graph showing variation of λ with ϕ

(b) Calculate the total charge on the ring.
7. An oil drop of radius 1.64 mm and density 0.851 g/cm3 is suspended in chamber when a downward electric field
of 1.92 × 105 N/C is applied. Find the charge on the drop, in terms of e.

8. Two charges +Q and -Q are placed at a point (a, b, c) and (−3a, 2b, −c) respectively. Calculate the dipole
moment vector of the system. If the system is placed in uniform electric field E = E0 (b j + c k), then find the
expression for the torque acting on the system.
9. Electrons and positrons are produced by the nuclear transformations of protons and neutrons known as Beta
decay.

(a) If a proton transforms into a neutron, is an electron or a positron produced ?

(b) If a neutron transforms into a proton,is an electron or a positron produced ?
10. Identify X in the following nuclear reactions :

(a) 1 H + 9 Be → X + n
12
(b) C + 1H → X
15
(c) N + 1 H → 4 He + X
