Definition of Ellipse
SAQ 1: How can we construct an ellipse on a coordinate plane?

Using the standard form of an ellipse to be able to determine the center, position of the major
axis, vertices, co-vertices, and foci. And solve for c using the c2=a2–b2, then plot the center,
vertices, co-vertices, and foci.

SAQ-2: What interesting properties does an ellipse possess?

Center, major axis, minor axis, vertices, covertices, and foci.

Let’s Practice!

ACTIVITY 1: Complete Me!

Directions: Complete each statement. Write your answer on the Learner’s Activity and
Assessment sheets.
1. An ellipse is the set of all points in the plane for which the sum of the distances from two
fixed points 𝐹1 and 𝐹2 is constant_. The points 𝐹1 and 𝐹2 are called the foci_ of the
ellipse.
2. The chord perpendicular to the major axis at the center of the ellipse is called Minor axis
of the ellipse.
3. The line that contains the foci and goes through the center of the ellipse is called Major
axis.
2 2
4. The graph of the equation 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 with 𝑎 > 𝑏 > 𝟢 is an ellipse with vertices (-a,0)
𝑎2 𝑏2
and (a,0) and foci (±𝑐, 𝟢), where 𝑐 = 2a . The major axis is horizontal.
2 2
5. The graph of the equation 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 with 𝑎 > 𝑏 > 𝟢 is an ellipse with vertices
𝑏2 𝑎2
And (0,b) and (0,-b) and foci (±𝑐, 𝟢), where 𝑐 = 2b. The major axis is vertical.
ACTIVITY 2: Find Me!
Directions: Find the coordinates of the foci, vertices and covertices of ellipse described by
each equation.

TRY

Let’s see how much have you learned today!

Assessment 1.

Directions: Complete each statement using the ellipse on the right.

1. The points (−5, 𝟢) and (5, 𝟢) are called vertices.

2. The points (𝟢, −4) and (𝟢, 4)are called co-vertices.
3. The points (−3, 𝟢) and (3, 𝟢) are called foci.
4. The segment with endpoints (−5, 𝟢) and (5, 𝟢) is called major axis.
5. The segment with endpoints(𝟢, −4) and (𝟢, 4) is called minor axis.

7. The graph of the equation 𝑥
+ = 1 with 𝑎 > 𝑏 > 𝟢 is an ellipse with vertices(0,±4)
9 16
covertices (±3,0) and foci (𝟢, ±𝑐), where 𝑐 =(0,±7). The major axis is 8 .

Assessment 2.

Directions: Read and understand each statement carefully. Choose the letter of the correct
answer and write it on the space provided before each number.

b. 1. What is the coordinates of the foci of an ellipse given vertices (0, ±11) and
covertices (±7, 𝟢)?
a. (0, ±√2) b. (0, ±6√2) c. (2√6, ±1) d. (2, ±5)
For items 2-4, refer to the ellipse on the right.

a. 2. Which of the following gives the coordinates of the vertices?

a. (±4,0) and(0, ±2) c. (4,0)and(0,2)
b. (±2,0) and(0, ±4) d. (−1,0)and(0,3)

b. 3. What is the center of the given ellipse?

a. (0,1) b. (0,0) c. (2,-1) d. ( -1,-1)

𝟐𝟓 𝟏𝟔
a. (±5,0) b. (0,1) c. (±3,0) d. (2, 2)

Assessment 3.
Directions: Identify whether the information provided defines an ellipse. Write YES on the
Space provided before each number. Otherwise, Justify your answer.
yes1. vertices:(±6, 𝟢); co-vertices : (𝟢, ±4 ); length of the major axis is 12.
No because the major axis is supposed to be horizontal 2. center :(𝟢, 𝟢); foci :(±4, 𝟢 );
major axis is vertical
yes3. foci: (±5, 𝟢); vertices : (𝟢, ±8); length of the major axis is 16.
yes4. major axis vertical with length 1𝟢; length of minor axis 4; center:(−2,3)
