axis)
LEARNING The learner determines the standard form of equation of a parabola
COMPETENCY (STEM_PC11AGIb-1)

UNDERSTAND

Parabola: Standard Equation (Axis of symmetry is parallel to x-axis)

SAQ 1: How can you determine whether the line of symmetry is parallel to the 𝐲-
axis or the 𝐱-axis?

SAQ-2: How can you determine whether the parabola of the given equation opens
to the right or to the left?

Let’s Practice!
:
Directions: Verify whether the given equation is an equation of a parabola. If the equation is
that of a parabola, write the equation in standard form. Determine the vertex 𝑉, focus 𝐹,
equation of the directrix and the line of symmetry.
1. 𝑦2 + 8𝑥 − 40 = 0
Solution:

𝑦2 + 8𝑥 − 40 = 0 ⇒ 𝐴𝑥2 + 𝐵𝑥𝑦 + 𝐶𝑦2 + 𝐷𝑥 + 𝐸𝑦 + 𝐺 = 0

Determine the values of the following constants.

𝐴= , 𝐵= , 𝐶= , 𝐷= , 𝐸= , 𝐺= .
Verify if 𝐵2 − 4𝐴𝐶 = 0. 𝐵2 −
4𝐴𝐶 =
0
( )2 ?
− 4( )(

?
_=0
_ =
0
To get the standard equation, simplify the given equation by completing
the left column and following the steps in the right column.

𝑦2 + 8𝑥 − 40 = 0 Instructions

Move all other terms to the right side of the

equation that is not similar to the terms with
variable of the 2nd degree
Add a constant to make the left side of the
equation a perfect square (if necessary). Note:
Use the property of addition for equality.
e Express the left side of the equation as a factor
of a perfect square (if necessary). Simplify the
right side of the equation by factoring, such that
the variable will have a coefficient of 1 (if
necessary).

Simplify further to satisfy (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 4𝑐(𝑥 − ℎ)

Vertex: 𝑉(ℎ, 𝑘)
Given: ℎ = and 𝑘 =
∴ Vertex is 𝑉( _, )
Focus: 𝐹(ℎ + 𝑐, 𝑘)
Given: ℎ = _, 𝑘 = , and 𝑐 =
Solution: ℎ+𝑐= = ,
∴ Focus is 𝐹( , )
Directrix: 𝑥 = ℎ − 𝑐
Given: ℎ = _ and 𝑐 =
Solution: ℎ−𝑐= _ = 1,
∴ Directrix is 𝑥 = .

Line of symmetry: 𝑦 = 𝑘
Given: 𝑘 = _
∴ Line of symmetry is 𝑦 = _
Standard equation : (𝑦 − 𝑘) = 4𝑐(𝑥 −
2

𝑘) Given: ℎ = _, 𝑘 = , and 𝑐 =
Solution: (𝑦 −
_)2 = 4( )(𝑥 −
_ )
(𝑦 )2 = (𝑥
)
Simplify to remove the extra grouping symbols

∴ Standard equation is _ .

Assessment 1:
Directions: Determine the standard form of the parabola (line of symmetry is parallel to the
𝑥-axis) with the following conditions. Show your solution.

1. The vertex is at thte origin and the directrix is 𝑥 = −4. Hint: 𝑥 = ℎ − 𝑐

Solution:

2. 𝑉(−2,4) and 𝐹(4,4).
Solution:

3. 𝐹(−2, 2) and directrix: 𝑥 = 2. Hint: Vertex is halfway from directrix to the focus.
