Categorize the characteristics of play
for children
• Rubin et al. (1983), described play when it contains these six essential
characteristics:
✓ Play is intrinsically motivated

✓ Play must be freely chosen by the respondents

✓ Play must be pleasurable

✓ Play is spontaneous

✓ Play is non-literal

✓ The player must actively engage in play


Stages of Play
• Mildred Parten (1933), claimed that children go through six stages of play
as identified below:
✓ Stage 1: Unoccupied Play

✓ Stage 2: Solitary Play

✓ Stage 3: Onlooker Play

✓ Stage 4: Parallel Play

✓ Stage 5: Associative Play

✓ Stage 6: Cooperative Play


Stages of Play
• Mildred Parten (1933), claimed that children go through six stages of play as identified below:
✓ Stage 1: Unoccupied Play (newborn and infant play)
✓ Stage 2: Solitary Play (disregard other children, constructing tower block)
✓ Stage 3: Onlooker Play (playing individually and is simultaneously observing, sitting passively
but very alert to actions)
✓ Stage 4: Parallel Play (playing with the same materials but each is playing independently,
playing with puzzles)
✓ Stage 5: Associative Play (several children play together but in loosely organized fashion, run
around playground)
✓ Stage 6: Cooperative Play (child accepts a designated role and is dependent on others to
achieve the goals of the play, storekeeper and customer)

Describe the patterns of play in children
Dhingra et al. (2005), explained three main elements to play
patterns:
• Play Materials (With and without)

• Play Activities (What about it and how is it similar)

• Extent of Adult Supervision (Adults vs. Teacher)


Describe the patterns of play in children
Gaskins et al. (2007), explained three general cultural perceptions/views
that significantly impacts play patterns:
• Culturally Curtailed Play ( limited value, discouraged)

• Culturally Accepted Play (keeps children busy, does not encourage)

• Culturally Cultivated Play (“work”, encouraged, promotes learning)
