2. A pipeline of 300 mm ∅ carrying water at an average velocity of 4.5 m/s branches

mm pipe is 5∕8 of the velocity in the main pipeline, determine the average velocity
of flow in the 200 mm pipe and the total flow rate in the system shown.

3. A normally loaded soft clay of low sensitivity has a liquid limit of 57%. Estimate
the compression index.
4. A rectangular foundation in a saturated clay measures 1.5 x 3 m. Given Df = 1.8 m ,
cu = 52 kN/m^2 and γ = 18.9 kN/m^3. Estimate the uplift capacity.

5. Oil, with a vapor pressure of 20 kPa, is delivered through a pipeline by equally


spaced pumps, each of which increases the oil pressure by 1.3 MPa. Friction losses
in the pipe are 150 Pa per meter of pipe. What is the maximum possible pump spacing
to avoid cavitation of the oil?

6. In a stability of floating bodies, the weight is removed and the bar is made heavy
enough to become completely submerged in the liquid so that the weight and buoyant

11. In a bulk density determination, a sample of clay with a mass of 683g was coated
with wax. The combined mass of the clay and the wax was 690.6g. The volume of the
clay and the wax was found, by immersion in water, to be 350ml. The sample was then
broken open and water content and particle specific gravity tests gave respectively
17% and 2.73. The specific gravity of the wax was 0.89. Determine the degree of
saturation.

12. A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless piston– cylinder device. The piston
has a mass of 4 kg and a cross-sectional area of 35 cm^2. A compressed spring above
the piston exerts a force of 60 N on the piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95
kPa, determine the pressure inside the cylinder.
13. A 0.36 m^2 prestressed concrete pile is to be driven in a clayey soil as shown in
the figure. The design capacity of the pile is 360 kN , with a factor of safety of

14. A coarse-sand sample is 15 cm high and has 5.5 cm diameter. It is placed in a


constant-head permeameter. Water passes through the sample under a constant head of

15. A worker in children’s playground is cleaning a slide with a hose. She observes that
a horizontal stream directed into the low end climbs to a point 12 ft above the
nozzle. What is the nozzle velocity of the stream?

16. A sand sample has a porosity of 30% and the specific gravity of 2.7. Compute the
effective unit weight of the submerged sand.

air drag, estimate the power required to drive this belt.

24. A pontoon 5 x 5 x 2 m floats in water with draft of 1.5 m. An orifice at the bottom
of the pontoon is 15 cm in diameter with coefficient of discharge of C = 0.60.
Determine the time required for the pontoon to sink its top after opening the orifice
at the bottom.
25. A tank of oil has a right triangular panel near the bottom, as shown in the figure.

1. A 2L x 4 x 1/2 (3/8 inch separation) ASTM A36, has one line of 8 , 3/4 inch diameter bolts and is 25 ft in length as shown. The double
angle is carrying a dead load of 40 kips and a live load of 120 kips . Estimate the ultimate tensile strength using LRFD method. For A36
steel , Fy = 36 ksi and Fu = 58 ksi.

2. Determine the LRFD Strength design for the 50 ksi axially loaded W 14 x 90 as shown in the figure.
3. A barge shown , diagrammatically supports the load W1 and W2 for every one meter strip along the longitudinal section. W1 = 145
kN.m , W2 = 290 kN/m , L1 and L3 = 3 m , L2 = 6m. Find the total length L so that the upward pressure us uniform and that the barge
remains horizontal.

4. A steel cube is subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of 1.5 MPa. Because of this pressure the volume decreases to give a dilatation of –10^–

7. A uniform bar AB weighing 424 lb , is fastened by a frictionless pin to a block weighing 200 lb as shown in the figure. At the vertical wall, f
= 0.268 while under the block f =0.20. Determine the force P needed to start motion to the right.

8. A short plastic tube is expected to carry up to a compressive force of 3000 N, and remain below 30% of the yield stress of 50 MPa. Available
tubes have a wall thickness of 1.5 mm with outer diameters in increments of 2 mm starting from 10 mm. Determine the actual factor of safety
of the stress relative to the yield stress. Assume the tube is short enough not to buckle under the compressive load.
9. A concrete one way slab has a total thickness of 120 mm. The slab will be reinforced with 12 mm ∅ with fy = 275 MPa. Concrete strength =
21 MPa. Determine the required steel area if the total factored moment acting on 1 m width of slab is 23 kN m. Concrete cover is 20 mm.

10. A decorative beam shown weighs 3.8 kN/m. It is simply supported on a span of 6 m. If the cracking moment of the beam is 34.6 kN.m, what
is the allowable load that the beam could carry?

11. An air-filled rubber ball has a diameter of 6 in. If the air pressure within it is increased until the ball’s diameter becomes 7 in., determine the
average normal strain in the rubber.

23. The cart has a weight of 2500 lb and a center of gravity at G. Determine the maximum positive moment created in the side girder at C as it
crosses the bridge. Assume the car can travel In either direction along the center of the deck, so that half its load is transferred to each of the
two side girders in the figure shown.
