What I Need to Know

In this module, you will learn about the changes that

may happen to materials due to changges in temperature.
When materials are heated or cooled, they may change their
forms: from solid to liquid (melting or liquefaction), liquid to
solid (freezing or solidification), liquid to gas (Evaporation),
and solid to gas (sublimation).

Learning Objectives
Describe changes in materials based on the effect of
temperature (S3MT- Ih-j-4)
 Solid to liquid
 Liquid to solid
 Liquid to gas
 Solid to gas

HOW TO USE THIS MODULE

This module contains a lesson of which you will be able to
describe the changes in materials, but first you should need to do
the following with the help or guidance of your parent/guardian.
Answer all the activities/questions on the answer sheet.

1. Scan the list of the Learning Objectives to get an idea of the

knowledge and skills you are expected to gain as you study
the module. These outcomes are based on the content
standards, performance standards, and learning
competencies of the K to 12 Curriculum for Grade 3 Science.

2. Take the Preassessment (What I Know). Your score will

determine your knowledge of the lessons in this module. If

2
you get 100% of the items correctly, you may proceed to the
next module. Otherwise, you must go through the lessons.
3. This lesson aims to develop the learning objective set for this
module.

4. Read and understand the content in the Lesson Information.

This component contains the basic information that you
need to know to be able to accomplish the lesson objective.

5. At the end of the lesson, do the activities (What’s More) for

enrichment and answer the assessment to find out how
much you have learned. If you did not get all the test items
correctly, go back to the Lesson Information. This will ensure
your mastery of basic information.

6. Perform the required Learning Activity, which consist of two

tasks for you to accomplish. Evaluate your performance
using the answer sheet.

7. At the end of this module, take the Post-Assessment to

evaluate your overall understanding about the lessons.

3
What I Know

Let us determine how much you already know about the

changes of matter. Read each item, then choose the best
answer. Write your answer on the blank before the number. If you
are done, check your answers using the answer sheet.

_____1. What happens to water when heated?

a. turns to solid
b. evaporates
c. melts
d. water increases

_____2. Which of the following will change from solid to gas when
uncovered and placed in an open area?
a. crayon c. mothball
b. water d. ice cream

_____3. When an ice candy melts, it changes from _______________.

a. a solid to a liquid
b. a liquid to a solid
c. a liquid to a gas
d. a solid to a gas

_____4. A liquid changes to solid when its temperature gets

_____________.
a. hotter c. higher
b. colder d. normal

_____5. Why do materials change in form?

a. due to the size of the material
b. due to changes of temperature
c. due to the color of the material
d. due to the materials’ container

4
What’s In

To be able to describe well the changes that may

happen to materials when they are heated or cooled, let us
review first the three states of matter and what temperature is.

Example: Which of the following materials is solid? Liquid? Gas?

Identify if it is hot or cold.

ice cream boiling water vapor from a boiling water

Read and remember the following:

A. Sates of matter

1. Solids are materials that can be held and can be

described exactly their color, size, shape, texture and
weight.

2. Liquids are materials that are visible but can not be held.
They don’t have definite shape but they follow the shape
of their container.

3. Gases are materials that can not be seen and can not be
held but you can feel it. However, there are gases that
can be seen because of their color, such as smoke and
vapor. They also take the shape of their container.

B. Temperature tells how hot or cold the material is. The

temperature of the material increases when heat is added. On
the other hand, the temperature of the material decreases when
heat is removed or cooled.

5
These are now the answers to the given questions based
from what you read. 5

SELF-CHECK:

Write solid, liquid, or gas under the state of matter. Then write
also each temperature whether it is hot or cold in the last column.

4. pancake in a hot frying pan
5. cooking oil in a heated pan

6
What’s New

The pupils played a teacher’s

modified “Sidking Bado”. They used the
materials written on each crampled
paper and the questions written on the
playing area as their basis in jumping or
leaping on the correct form of matter.

The teacher asked the pupils to

show how they played the 1st round
game by illustrating it using lines on the
given drawings.

These are the illustrations of the pupils.

The illustrations show that the pupils stepped on the correct

form of matters.

7
What Is it

Matter have different forms. These are solid, liquid, and

gas. Each form may change to another form due to the
changes in temperature. When materials are heated, they
may change from solid to liquid or from liquid to gas. Matters
will also change from liquid to solid when cooled or freezed.
There are also solids that change naturally to gas.

Example: Why did the pupils jump or leap on the correct form of
matter?

Let us see why they answered the questions correctly.

1. Player 1 picked up an ice cream. Ice cream is

solid in form but it melts and turns to liquid
when removed from the freezer which is
very cold and exposed to a higher
temperature. This change is called melting
or liquefaction. The process of heating is
very important in changing other solid
materials into a liquid form.

2. A melted ice cream is a liquid in form

which will change into solid form again
when returned back in a freezer.
There are some liquid materials that
change from liquid to solid when heat
is removed or when the material is
cooled. This change is called freezing
or solidification.

3. The second player picked up water.

Any liquid when heated turns to gas.
The water vapor that comes out in
a boiling water is a gas. Some
liquids such as alcohol, perfume,
8
and acetone evaporate naturally without heating but they
quickly evaporate when exposed to sunlight. So, a change
from liquid to gas is called evaporation.

However, condensation takes place when vapors in the

atmosphere cool enough and it will change to liquid again.

4. There are other matters that change from

solid to gas with out passing through the
liquid state. A solid will slowly disappear
when exposed to sunlight or air. This change
is called sublimation. Some examples are
bathroom deodorizer, dry ice, mothball, and
solid air freshener.

Study the illustration for clearer understanding.
