SANKALP SHEET – 5
Lecture 6: ATOMIC STRUCTURE
(de Broglie’s Equation, Heisenberg’s Uncertanity Principle)
LEVEL - 1
1. Calculate the de-Broglie wavelength of electron in next to inner orbit.

2. Calculate the wavelength of a moving electron having 4.55  10–25J of kinetic energy.

3. Calculate the wavelength of an electron moving with a velocity of 2.05  107 ms–1.

4. The mass of an electron is 9.1  10–31 kg. If its K.E. is 3.0  10–25 J, calculate its wavelength.

5. Two particles A and B are in motion. If the wavelength associated with particle A is 5  10–8m calculate the
wavelength associated with particles B if its momentum is half of A.
6. The sodium flame test has a characteristic yellow colour due to emissions of wavelength 589 nm. What is the
mass equivalence of one photon of this wavelength?
7. Calculate the uncertainty in the velocity of a wagon of mass 2000 kg whose position is known to an accuracy
of  10m.
8. Calculate the uncertainty in position of a dust particle with mass equal to 1 mg if the uncertainty in its velocity
is 5.5  10–20 ms–1.
9. A dust particle having mass equal to 10–11g, diameter 10–4 cm and velocity 10–4 cm sec–1. The error in
measurement of velocity is 0.1%. Calculate uncertainty in its position. Comment on the result.
10. Iodine molecule dissociates into atoms after absorbing light of 4500Å. If one quantum of radiation is absorbed
by each molecule, calculate the kinetic energy of iodine atoms. (Bond energy of I2 = 240 kJ mol–1)

LEVEL - 2
11. A proton is accelerated to one-tenth of the velocity of light. If its velocity can be measured with a precision
1%. What must be its uncertainty in position?

12. To what effective potential a proton beam be subjected to give its protons a wavelength of 1  10–10m.

13. A base ball of mass 200 g is moving with velocity 30  102 cm/s. If we can locate the base ball with an error
equal in magnitude to the  of the light used (5000Å), how will the uncertainty in momentum be compared with
the total momentum of base ball.
14. An electron has a speed of 40 m/s, accurate up to 99.99%. What is the uncertainty in locating its position?

15. What is de-Broglie wavelength of a He-atom in a container at 300 K (Use Uavg)

16. Through what potential difference must an electron pass to have a wavelength of 500Å.
17. An electron beam is accelerated by a potential difference of 1000 V. What is the wavelength of the wave
associated with the electron beam? (Mass of electron = 9.11  10 kg).
–31

18. What is the ratio of the velocities of CH4 and O2 molecules so that they are associated with de Broglie waves
of equal wavelength?
19. Calculate the retarding potential to the applied to an electron to increase its de-Broglie wavelength from 1.75Å
to 2.25Å?
20. An electron is continuously accelerated in vacuum tube by applying potential difference. If its de-Broglie
wavelength is decreased by 1%, the change in the kinetic energy of the electron is nearly.
