Bad Reading Habits

Bad reading habits stand for less efficient reading techniques. Some will be easy to change;
others may require more training and time. Bad reading habits negatively affect student’s
educational achievement. Bad reading habits are never a good thing when we are trying to absorb
any kind of information.

We should visualize all the techniques of reading, develop a positive attitude towards reading
and tell our mind to focus. Low light conditions and any kind of distraction support bad
reading habits. The better surrounding can help you to keep up concentration. If once attention
is diverted then it takes a lot of time to regain it.

We need to give some time to learn reading in groups of words. This technique helps to enhance
reading speed which saves our time and eyes from tiring. Previewing is the first step of speed
reading. It helps you to decide whether the text is useful for your purpose. We should ask
ourselves WH questions to gather information quickly.

Saying words silently to oneself while reading is called sub vocalization. This lessens the
process of fast reading. We can stop doing it by reading groups of words. Conceptualizing
words as objects can also help us to overcome sub vocalization. Skipping back is also a bad
reading habit that slows down the reading speed. As time added on we will realize we haven't
missed anything and we will get on track in the next paragraph.

CONCLUSION:

Skipping back, sub vocalization, loss of attention, environment, previewing, attitude, and word
group reading are highlighted bad reading habits. So to become proficient readers we have to
follow the ways. By opting for the methods mentioned above one can become an efficient reader.
Overcoming the problems of bad learning habits will make improvements in academic
achievement, improve health status, build vocabulary, increase students' perceptions and expand
their knowledge bank equally for meaningful personal and national development.
