What I Need to Know

Content Standard
The learner demonstrates an understanding of concepts, underlying theories and
principles in providing a house to swine stocks.

Performance Standard

The learner independently identifies ways on how to provide appropriate housing

to swine stocks.

Learning Competencies:

Select a location desirable for a group of swine stocks.

Perform calculation of floor space requirement for every group of swine stocks.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

1. Discuss the significance of choosing the right location for housing swine stock.
2. Construct a house development plan for a specified batch of swine.

What’s In

There are handy items found in the pig farm and are used for minor
repairs and facilities maintenance. Usually, they are found in every pig houses
used in managing animals such as; feeding, vaccination, and the like.

What benefits can a farmer have in providing a house for his swine
stocks?

What’s New
Direction: Submit a picture of a a pigsty or you may draw it on a
clean sheet of bondpaper.

3
What is It

Selection of Site Desirable for Swine Production

1. The site should be at an elevated place that cannot be flooded by rainwater.

2.The site should be protected from the sun (shade from trees) and have ample
fresh air.

3. The site must be located away from residences (around 8-10 meter away
downwind).

4. In case of a large scale pig farm, the site selected needs also to be: well
connected to roads throughout the year,
5. It must be suitable for manure disposal, connected to reliable water and
electricity sources.

6. Farm shall not be located in the risky area exposed to physical, chemical and
biological contamination and pollution that may be harmful to human and animal
health.

7. Farm shall be located away from abattoir and live animal market for at least 5
km for prevention of disease transmission. Otherwise the farm shall have disease
control measures.

Various types of Roofs for Pig Houses

Gable roof- The term ‘gable’ refers to the triangle spot that is formed when the two
pitched areas of the roof meet. The gable roof is a very popular type of roof: easy to
build, sheds water well, facilitates ventilation and can be applied to most house
designs.
Hip roof- is slightly more difficult to build and usually has 4 sides. It’s a popular
choice but does not provide for ventilation. They do perform better in high wind
areas.
Dutch roof- is basically a hip roof with a small gable at either end. The result is
easier access to the lower portion of the roof with the added benefits of natural light
and extra space.
Mansard roof- It is a French design and is more difficult to build than the hip or
gable roof. It actually features two slopes within one on each side. The bottom
partof the roof slope is steeper so that the pitch of the roof barely starts. This
allows more room on the inside and in most cases creates an extra space.

Flat roof- Most flat roofs are not really 100% flat, they are low-sloped roofs that
appear flat, but have a little bit of a slope to allow for the run-off water.

4
Shed roof- Shed roof is similar to a flat roof but has more pitch, it is frequently
used for additions or with other roof styles.
Butterfly roof- This is a very modern design that is aesthetically unique. It
provides plenty of light and ventilation but drainage is a problem.
Gambrel roof- It is also called barn roof because it has been used extensively on
barns. It provides additional headroom in the attic.

Dormer roof- A dormer is more an addition to anexistent roof. It is a window and a

roof (gabled, hipped, flat, among others) protruding from the existing slope of the
roof. A functional dormer creates usable space out of the roof, adding natural light
and headroom.

M Shaped- A M-shaped roof is basically a double gable roof featuring two sloped
sides that meet in the middle with corresponding slopes on each side.

Clerestory roof - is a roof with a vertical wall which sits between the two sloping
sides, which features a row of windows (or one long, continuous window). The
clerestory roof can be symmetrical, with a hipped or gable-type design, or else it
can be asymmetrical, resembling something closer to a skillion roof. The main
feature of a clerestory roof is that it incorporates a row of clerestory windows in the
vertical panel between the two sloping roof planes. The row of windows forms a
‘clear storey’.

Tips on How to Keep Pigs Healthy

What’s More

Activity 1

Matching Type: Match column A with Column B

Column A Column B

1.Breeding boar a. termination of pregnancy followed by death of fetus.

2.Breeding sow b. current of air in closed-in space

3.Gilt c. male stock used in breeding

4.Piglets d. a swine house

5.Wean-lings e. explains rainfall, temperature, humidity, etc.

7.Draft g. a young female stock not littered yet

8.Abortion h. refers to young pigs

9.Disease i. refers to young pigs newly separated from their mother

10.Climatic condition j. manifested by distinguishing symptoms

k. Organisms administered to produce immunity

Activity 2

Write T if the statement is correct and F if the statement is incorrect. Write your

answer on the space provided before each number.

1. Appropriate housing would lead to the spread of diseases to swine.

2. The pig house building should be constructed with its length axis in an East-West
direction.
3. A pigsty can be constructed cheaply by using locally available materials.

4. Clean and sufficient drinking water is essential to pigs health.

The best site for a pig farm should be 5 km away from a residential area.

What I Have Learned

Remember These:
1. Appropriate housing is a requirement for a successful swine raising.

2. Factors in choosing the best site for a pig farm should be considered and be
given priority to avoid problems relating to health, market, and other concerns
relating pig production.

7
What I Can Do

Activity 3
Construct a development plan for a typical pig house. The plan must have the
following features;

1. Cover leaf with title (“ Development Plan for a Typical Pig House”) , submitted by;,
submitted to;..

2. Floor Plan with dimension suggested in the discussion, geographical location to

show if the east-west orientation is followed.
3. Front view, side views, rear view..

4. Bill of materials., ( in 5 columns; Quantity, Unit, Description, Cost, Total cost)..be

sure to include over-all amount below the figures under the column total cost.
5. Pictorial drawing of the typical pig house.

Note; Use short bond paper on this activity and finally enclosed all the developed
features in a folder with fastener.
