TIMKEN

A PREMIUM
CARBON & ALLOY SPECIALITY
LONG STEEL MANUFACTUERER
Introduction
Timken as a company to the majority of public in Asia is
known as a bearing company. But The Timken Company has
two business units, Bearing and Power Transmission group and
other is the Steel group.

In the early 1900s, the search for high quality steel to ensure
uninterrupted bearing production for U.S. automotive
manufacturers led The Timken Company to establish its Harrison
Steel Plant in Canton, Ohio. Since melting its first heat of steel
opened its third and largest steelmaking facility, the Faircrest
Steel Plant, in 1985. It supplies ingot-cast steel to a growing
customer base for exceptionally clean, air-melted ferrous alloys

known for superior quality, many of which are proprietary. This

investment definitively established Timken's position as a
preferred provider of world-class steels for an ever-increasing,
diverse global customer base.
All three of these plants are located in Canton, Ohio in USA,

and alloy steel in the form of bars, round corner squares (RCS)
and seamless mechanical tubes for critical applications in many
industries.
Today, the Harrison Steel Plant continues to operate a strand-
cast production facility at its original location adjacent to the
company's global headquarters. In 1930, Timken invested in a
steel tube plant nearby Gambrinus manufacturing campus. The
Gambrinus Steel Plant produces seamless mechanical steel tubing

Timken manufactures some of the cleanest, highest-quality

steel in the world for the most demanding applications. The
majority of Timken steel is custom melted to each customer's
chemistry and manufacturing specifications. Timken also
produces standard ASTM grades and quality-level steels that
offer higher performance and longer life than many competing
steel products. Where no steel exists to do a job, Timken works
with customers to develop new steel that features precise
metallurgy and specific physical properties to suit the application.
machinery, mining, power transmission, rail,marine,defense,
agriculture, distribution, and wind energy industries for the
various critical applications.
The Mobile On Highway segment supplies steel to the
manufacturers of passenger cars and light, medium and heavy
trucks for the various critical applications.
The Oil and Gas segment supplies steel to manufacturers of
oil and gas exploration (drilling) and completion tools and
components, Timken's world-class machining center in Texas
produces precision-drilled and finished bars and tubes used in
these applications, for which customers rapid delivery of products
and services is an essential part of the value proposition.

The steel bar and tube products complement a line of precision

components, including cut rings and semi-finished and finished
components. Timken recently expanded its value-added solution

Timken also offers differentiated products and value-added

solutions such as precision components and high-performance
capabilities in precision drilling and finishing by acquiring
Boring Specialties in Houston Texas, U.S.A. Now, Timken
Boring Specialties produces drilled-bar material primarily for
oil and gas applications. This offering differentiates Timken in
terms of material value and value-added processing.
This knowledge is shared through Timken Steel Institute,
a training program designed to help steel customers gain a better
understanding of the metallurgical knowledge and materials
science essential about specialized steel for their most demanding
applications.
Steel Business Segmentation
The Timken steel group comprises three business segments
which are based on the industries/customers served. These
segments are Industrial, Mobile On Highway and Oil and Gas
segments. With such an industry focused structure, Timken
Steel has the ability to get very close to each customers/industries
to understand and serve their different needs in the most effective
fashion.
The Industrial segment supplies steel to the customers in
the aerospace, bearing, construction equipment, industrial

Timken typically processes close to 500 different grades of
steel per year though it has capability to produce more than
1000 grades.
Since melting its first steel, Timken has continually invested
in research and development activities to develop the art of
making some of the cleanest steel in the world. During its 94-
year focus on high performance bearing steels and 111 years of
leadership in bearing manufacturing, Timken through its strong
research & development has developed a unique steelmaking
process, quality control, and steel refining capabilities which
differentiate Timken from other steel manufacturers.

provides high-quality, long-length products including alloyed
steel bars, round-corner squares, seamless mechanical tubes and
precision steel components. These steel products are used in
those applications that demand high performance, longer life,
high reliability and operate in harsh environments. Timken is
known for producing some of the world's cleanest air-melted
steel, with highly engineered ferrous alloys specifically developed
for customers’ application conditions. Timken accomplishes
this with tight and consistent chemistry control with high
repeatability.

Timken Collaboration with Daido Steel, Japan
In September 2009, Timken expanded its ability to offer
high performance, premium engineered steel solutions to
customers in Asia by establishing production within the region
through an arrangement with Japan-based Daido Steel Co. Ltd.
Through this collaborative agreement, Timken specialty
steel products are manufactured by Daido according to Timken
specifications. This allows Timken to broaden service to
industrial customers in Asia, where such highly engineered,
specialty steel is not widely available, and demand for it continues
to grow.

How is Timken steel manufactured?
We currently have two state-of-the-art production facilities in
the U.S. where we produce superior quality alloy and carbon
steel, mainly in the form of bars, squares (RCS) and seamless
mechanical tubing. In both facilities, we use 100 percent scrap
as input- in the electric arc furnaces to melt the steel and vacuum
arc degassing for refining. One mill uses bottom pour ingots to
convert liquid steel into solid, while the other mill uses a
continuous caster process. We also have one exclusive tube-
making facility that produces seamless mechanical tubing in
both hot- and cold-finish conditions.
