Allison Repass
Special Education (Transition age) Daily Living Skills

Common Core Standards:

RI.11-12.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative,
connotative, and technical meanings; analyze how an author uses and refines the meaning of a key term or
terms over the course of a text.
RI.11-12.4c Identify content specific words, key terms, or technical terms in a text.
Lesson Summary:

Students will learn to recognize key terms within daily living and vocational scenarios. Students will
understand and apply terms throughout community activities.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson plan will be broken up into 5 days. Each day will consist of 30 minute lessons. Totalling 150
minutes.

Commentary:
Students will be challenged on their independent skills of doing their laundry due to medical/ and physical
needs. For students who are doing the activities in the lesson plan, I will utilize the prompting hierarchy to
determine the amount of support they need to be successful. These prompting hierarchy include: independent,
visual prompt, verbal prompt, gestural prompt, faded physical prompt, and full physical prompt.

Instructional Procedures
Day1:
The first day will begin With a pre-assessment to determine each student’s prior knowledge of
laundry(15minutes). Students will be given an IPAD with a sequencing activity on it to put the steps of doing
laundry in the correct order. Instructor will then review the correct sequence of doing laundry and answer any
questions students may have (5 min). Following the assessment students will be directed to the smart board in
the front of the class to view an informational video of how to complete all of the steps of doing laundry (10
min). Essential Life Skills for Teens | The Laundry Episode
Day 2: The instructor will begin with the introduction of the story “J.R. Goes to the Laundromat”. During the
introduction, the instructor will use 10 minutes to introduce key words in the story. The instructor will review
each of the vocabulary words and present them on the smart board in the front of the class for students to
reference. Students will then be given 15 minutes to independently read the story “J.R. goes to the
Laundromat.Students will then be asked to discuss the reading with their table partners. Instructor will answer
any question that may arise from the discussion (5 min).

Day 3: The instructor will begin with re-reading the story aloud to the class to solidify topic comprehension (15
minutes). After review of the story, students will be asked to answer 10 comprehension questions about the
story in the form of a quiz on student IPAD (15 minutes).

Day4: Students will match definitions of vocabulary words to definitions on a worksheet, review with the
instructor as needed (10 minutes). Students will correctly sequence the steps of doing laundry through
sequencing activity on IPAD (10 minutes). Students will take turns coming up to the smart board to accurately
sort laundry between darks, whites on a sorting activity created by the instructor (10 Minutes).

Day 5: students will gain real world experience of doing laundry by practicing each step in small groups on a
field trip to the laundromat (30 minutes). Instructor will take students to a laundromat facility. Instructor will
divide students into two groups, supplying students with all of the materials needed to complete laundry at the
laundromat. This includes assorted articles of clothing, laundry baskets, detergent ect. Students will work as a
team to complete all steps of doing laundry. Including sorting darks and whites, loading washer, adding
detergent, paying for usage of machine, putting washer on correct setting, unloading washer, loading dryer,
unloading dryer, folding clothes. Instructor will evaluate students on the task using a checklist.

Pre-Assessment:
• Present each student with an ipad that has a laundry sequencing activity on it.
• Students will drag pictures into the correct place in the sequence to show the steps of doing laundry.
• Determine how many of the steps each student got correct and which steps they struggled placing in
order.
• Use this information to guide instruction and what steps may need extra time to work through.
Scoring Guidelines:
Instructors will utilize a checklist to record which steps were sequenced correctly. This information will help
instructors plan on what areas need to be reviewed most and what level of prompting is needed for the student.

Post-Assessment:
• Students will be tested on their knowledge of the key terms of the story and the steps to laundry by
doing laundry themselves.
• The 8 students will be broken up into groups of 2.
• The class will be taken to a laundromat where each group will be provided with all of the materials
necessary to do laundry.
• Students will be required to demonstrate their knowledge of the lesson and do 1 load of laundry.
Scoring Guidelines:
DefInstructors will again use a checklist to analyze students' ability to complete the task of doing
laundry.

• Sort darks from lights

• Identify the washer, dryer, detergent
• Load washer
• Add detergent
• Put washer on correct setting
• Unload washer
• Load dryer
• Fold clothes

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students:

The activities can be modified for accelerated students by allowing them to read the story independently,
students can do the final assignment of doing laundry by themselves and an added assignment of creating their
own social story for doing laundry.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material:

Lesson activities will be modified with individualized levels and students will have assistance with prompting
levels. The prompting hierarchy include: independent, visual prompt, verbal prompt, gestural prompt, faded
physical prompt, and full physical prompt.

Homework Options and Home Connections
For my classroom, we do not typically send home homework. I encourage parents to be involved and allow
students to help them with the laundry at home. This is a daily living task that students should learn to be
independent in their adult lives.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This lesson can be integrated into a math lesson. Doing laundry although has a lot of vocabulary words to learn
and apply it also includes a bit of math. Some math topics used in laundry include measuring, sorting,
counting, money math, telling time.

Additional Notes
At the school where I teach, my classroom focuses on daily living skills for student with moderate to profound
developmental disabilities. We take field trips daily to gain real world practice on our lessons. We also have an
apartment set up in a classroom where students learn cooking and laundry skills. This classroom or the
laundromat would be where I conduct the last day of this lesson.
