Ask Question
I’m assuming that you’re not a UPSC aspirant and GK is a big deal for you (like it was for
me)

Before I start, here’s little something about me- Business and Financial Modeling

I have been from the science and mathematics background and then I did my
engineering. So the last time I read GK was in the form of Social Science way back
during high school days. (when I studied back then, scored 10 CGPA and forgot it
for once n all).

I had a corporate stint after my graduation (never thought of preparing any govt
exam, forget UPSC). Though I’ve some peers in my batch who have been UPSC
aspirants.

What I want to highlight is - don’t be afraid of GK even if you’re someone like me who
has so ‘specifically’ odd relationship with ‘general knowledge’

Let’s get started !

Here, I’ll be sharing my strategy. This worked for me. This may or may not work for you. My
suggestion is that you must make your own way based on the experiences of so many
people out there!

When we say GK, it gets served on the plate in two ways- Static and Current

Let’s Start with Current, it sounds lively :)

Daily newspaper reading is a must but I never did that (given my time constraint).
I preferred watching daily news analysis of The Hindu from one of the youtube
channels. There are plethora of options out there. See what suits you best. I never
made notes out of it. It was just to remain aware of what’s going on in the world.

Secondly, on the monthly basis I used to watch monthly GK capsule by a

youtube channel named Endeavour (to cover the important highlights of the
month for the quick revision)

Lastly, towards the end of my preparation, it was the time for a final revision. Then
I referred to Manorama (there’s a section in Manorama which compiles
important highlights as per the calendar).

Adding to the last point, I took help from a book called ‘Engineers Exclusive
Current Affairs by Made Easy- Annual Edition’ which was also a good refresher
and revision material by the end.

Please note that the latest edition of both Manorama yearbook and the Made Easy
book usually come by the End of the year (in November most probably). That’s when you
should buy it for final consolidation of your daily efforts. This will help you revise stuffs till
october. For the months of november and January, refer to some other source. For govt
policies also, you should stick to these two books only.

Now, coming to the Static part (sounds scary no?)

beneficial that learning itself!

So, Lucent2 option was
6 not there anymore. That’s when I found this cute book
called of GK by Manohar Pandey (Arihant publication). It costed me around 30
bucks back then (imagine how slim it was as a book). I referred to this book for
polity and history. The idea was to cover the width and not the depth. To
understand the topics better, I used to watch random youtube videos. However,
my final point of reference was this book only.

History and Polity done, now comes the geography part. Here it was the game of
visualisation so I again took help from youtube. Please note that you can get the
basic topics to read from anywhere, what matters is the medium you’re
consuming it from. Make sure your refer to the interactive sources.

Then there’s the miscellaneous part- everything from the superlatives, the
international organisation to tribes and what not. For these topics, I again
watched random videos and many a times, I found amazing tricks to learn. While
it may sound so unplanned, trust me that when you keep doing over a period of
time, you realize it’s working.

My personal hacks-

As I was working full time, I deadly lacked in time. I used to record my voice
whenever I used to read and I had my own audio playlist for revision. Though it
wasn’t melodious to hear my own voice :P

Secondly, I am pathetic at remembering dates (even birthdays of friends). So, I

had my mobile clock set in 24 hrs format for revising the dates. For instance-
19:47 was when we got independent :D

Lastly, I hardly attended any live learning session on youtube. I always used to
watch videos later at 1.5x speed or even more (to save time!)

PS- I’ve tried to cover all that I can recall at this moment. I’ll keep adding if I ever find I’ve
missed anything.

Final advice- Your situation might me different from mine. Some of these things may work
for you, others can’t. In the end it’s your journey. Make it memorable and enjoy the
process. Everything else will fall in place. All the best :

Hello,

Preparing for GK and particularly for TISS is a real hassle for Management School targeting
Aspirants.

Question is How someone obtain a better result in less time and effort?

The answer is simple don't go with traditional methods.

What are Traditional methods?

Suppose, you wanted to start preparing for TISS then either you directly go with the basic
GK book like Lucents /Arihant's GK or you can refer India Yearbook 2019.

But don't you think in 75 days you can succeed in that afterwards revised with Question
Answers.

Big NO!

A simple technique that I use to follow :

Answers are Aspirants are from diverse backgrounds such as UPSC, SSC, Majorly RBI
Aspirants, and more all intellectual under the one roof.

So, what you can do is start elimination methods that are studied in 8th Class.

Identify the Trustable source for studying.

Differentiate the Relevant and least relevant as per TISS.

Make your own notes from the source and consider the static and Current significance.

Start to build your habit just to be around TISS only.

Eliminating the irrelevant topic really help you to boost your preparation.

Example: Suppose you are focusing on the Polity, Governance & Law part it is impossible
for you to remember whole Articles, writs, Fundamental rights, duties, DPSP's. Instead of
that what you can do is just focus on complete year remark the important polity,
governance and Law events and activities and then focus on Current part and respective if
the current activity goes to the static part and try to mesmerising that portion.

It reduces your time and effort and help achieve good marks.

Thanks for your time for reading understandinHappy Happy learning!!

General knowledge is information that has been accumulated over time through various
mediums. It excludes specialized learning that can only be obtained with extensive training
and information confined to a single medium. General knowledge is an essential

sites such as YouTube, Vimeo and Metacafe boast monthly audience numbers in the
millions.

With digital videos continuing to gain popularity, it seems only natural that this familiar
and widespread platform extends into the education setting.

People today are utilizing educational videos as a tool for learning everything from
changing a tire to the latest dance craze. Remarkably, millennials make up 92% of the
digital video viewing audience. Abstract topics that once seemed difficult to teach and
learn are now more accessible and understandable thanks to the availability of educational
videos.

Studies have shown that the use of short video clips allows for more efficient processing
and memory recall. The visual and auditory nature of videos appeals to a wide audience
and allows each user to process information in a way that’s natural to them.

They are useful because

(1) if they are up-to-date they can help us understand what someone might mean when
they use a particular word, or

(2) they help scholars understand how a word used to be used if the dictionary is regarding

The General Awareness section of TISS is extremely important as not only does it have the
maximum marks of all sections, it also an easy scoring section which needs minimum time.

TISSNET GK is a combination of static and dynamic GK. So you will have to know both.

Reading newspapers and being aware of what is happening around you helps. Focus on
news related to India, law, culture, political and social issues, awards ( especially social and
environmental) and sports events as well. Various days and their theme for the particular
year is also asked. Have not seen a lot of questions being asked on business news though.
You can use various platforms for UPSC/ civil service preparation as well. They usually offer
such news in a concise form.

TISS is a Social Sciences Institute and TISSNET is an entrance for various courses such as
M.A. in social sciences, globalisation and labour, HRM and Labour relations, disaster
management, Social work, Women Studies etc. Hence general awareness usually revolves
around such topics and is a bit different from other management entrances. Various social
issues especially those related to tribes and communities and women, facts related to
culture, flora and fauna, communities, tribes, languages etc find place. Just to give you a
perspective, you may be given the name of a tribe or a folk dance and asked which state it
belongs to. So study folk dances, cuisines, state animals, trees, flowers, language, festivals
etc.

There are great apps with whom u prepared in a fantastic way but dailyl readings is much
more useful.

Why I m saying it bcoz the Q setter knows that the aspirant is not a supercimputer who
knows all thing but they ask Q from hot topic.

One eg ie Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is on the hitlist n maybe in the coming days too.

So in TISSNET 2017,there is a Q that who was the head of state of Pakistan at that time n
the answer is AYUB KHAN.

So the topic is IWT but they rolled n folded tge Q is JALEBI shape .

So it depends on u that how u pick the hot issues n views it from different angles.

All depends on u.

GK Section 40 questions and 15 minutes

Main deciding factor of TISS exam is GK. This section comprised 40 questions, each
carrying 1 mark. Out of the 40 questions, there were 22 on static ones and 18 on current
affairs. There were around 13 questions on international affairs and 27 related to national
ones. About 16 questions were easy, 10 were medium and 14 difficult. A score of 16 would
be a good benchmark. Attempting all GA questions would not have taken more than 15
minutes.
