What is an IT / ungrounded system ?

According to IEC Standard,

TT system means
T T I
Transformer Neutral is grounded (T)
Loads shielding are grounded (T)

TN system means
Transformer Neutral is grounded (T)
Loads shielding are to Neutral, (N)
3Ph 3Ph+N
IT system means
Transformer Neutral is Isolated from ground (I)
Loads shielding are grounded (T)
Load Load Load

T N T
Vigirex Vigilohm
Why an ungrounded network ? TT, TN, grounding arrangement
At 1st ground fault,
the current loop from the transformer, to the load,
then to the ground, back to the transformer
. The RCCB opens : Continuity of service
. Electrical shock is possible : Safety √

IT, isolated arrangement

At 1st ground fault,
there is NO current to loop as the transformer is
not grounded
Confidential Property of Schneider Electric | Page 6 . The RCCB closed : Continuity of service √
. No dangerous voltage : Safety √
Key benefits of ungrounded systems
Ungrounded system, provides Continuity of service and Safety even in case of ground fault

Focused on critical applications such as continuous processes, ATEX, harsh environment,

“critical for safety” sites

Benefits lands on OPEX, measured in

cost per minute of disrupted process
cost of the wasted production
cost on O&M to stop current work and rush at locating and fixing the problem
cost of immobilized production staff due to the disruption
cost of damaged equipment, overheat, fire, explosion…
And
human impact due to interruption of supply and in case a person would be injured

But if Continuity of Service & Safety remains even in case of fault, How do I know the issue ?

Insulation test
O.T. Panel HRP & OTD
By pressing the test button, a 39kΩ insulation fault is created between network
and earth
IMD must trigger an alarm, the HRP buzzer buzz…

Comments
The standard do not request any test on the transformer
Prevention of false alarm

IMxx-H measures extremely low currents @2,5Hz.

IMxx-H is very specific and very precise to detect a few µA leakage currents, which lead to
high Insulation resistance, >8 or 10 MΩ, when off-load

When installing HRP, the insulation resistance will drop to 2 MΩ

This is to prevent IMxx-H to potentially display “ injection disconnected”, due to R > 10 MΩ
HRP creates a controlled leakage current with a 2MΩ resistance from system to earth.
This insulation resistance does not mitigate system safety, the system minimum insulation
alarm is 50 kΩ
Competition pull down is 1MΩ max
