HYDRAULICS – CIVE 4007

Answer ALL Questions.

Question 1

Pump Characteristics

Discharge (L/s) 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70
Head(m) 26.25 24.00 21.75 19.50 17.50 15.00 11.75 6.75
Efficiency (%) 0 28 51 68 80 85 80 64

(i) Given the pump characteristics above, determine the pump efficiency and
power requirement for a pipeline of diameter 250 mm, length 2 km,
roughness ks = 0.03 mm, and a static head of 15 m. Comment on the
suitability of the pump and pipeline combination.
Ignore minor losses as the pipe is very long. [15 marks]

(ii) What would be the operating conditions if another pump (with the same
characteristics as above) is connected in parallel to the first pump to handle
the pumping requirement of the pipeline? [10 marks]

Question 2

(a) From the manufacturer’s data, a pump of 254 mm impeller diameter has a
capacity of 76 L/s at a head of 18.6 m when operating at a speed of 900 rpm.
It is desired that the capacity be about 95 L/s at the same efficiency.
Determine the adjusted speed of the pump and the corresponding head.
[7 marks]

(b) A pumping system is to deliver 28.3 L/s of water at 15°C. The suction line is
152 mm in diameter in a 91 m long cast iron pipe. The suction inlet is 6 m
above the reservoir level. The atmospheric pressure of 101 kPa exists over the
reservoir. The required NPSH of the pump is 2 m. Determine whether the
system will have a cavitation problem. (Vapour pressure of water at 15° C is
16.8 kPa; kinematic viscosity of water 15°C is 1.14 x 10 -6 m2/s)
[10 marks]

(c) Suggest four ways of increasing the NPSHA.

Question 3

(a) A 2300 m long steel pipeline leading from a large tank has a diameter of 15 cm
and thickness of 2.8 mm. When a discharge of 2200 L/min of water was
flowing the valve was suddenly closed completely. Sketch the variation of
the water hammer pressure with time at

(i) the valve end.

(ii) A distance of 575 m from the valve
(iii) A distance of 57.5 m from the upstream tank.

(b) A rectangular channel 4m wide conveys a discharge of 18 m3/s of a depth of

2.25 m. Determine the depth and celerity of the positive surge wave resulting
from a sudden, partial gate closure which reduces the downstream discharge
to 10 m3/s.

Question 4

A long rectangular channel 2.5 m wide, bed slope 1:1000 and Manning’s roughness
coefficient 0.02, discharges 4.5 m3/s freely to the atmosphere at the downstream end.
Assuming that at the free overfall the depth approximates closely to the critical
depth, compute the surface profile to within approximately 10 per cent of the
uniform flow depth. Use five steps.
