ABSTRACT

Throughout the life cycle of engineering products, the uses of computers are prominent
and often have a central role. With the help of Computer Aided Designing, Computer
Aided Manufacturing and the application of various computer software’s in engineering I
analyze the robustness and the performance of the components, which encompasses
simulations, validations and optimization of products and manufacturing tools. This
assignment clearly demonstrates the significance of CAD and CAM solutions.

Hence, I joined the CATIA course to enhance my knowledge about design and
manufacturing.

Being a student of CATIA course, only gaining knowledge about design software was
not enough. So I realized it is also important to implement my knowledge into a project
with my knowledge, what I have learn in this course and my innovative ideas.

Hence I came up with the idea of designing of a model of W9 ENGINE with the
available resources in our work unit. This project on W9 ENGINE provided me with an
excellent opportunity to brush my knowledge on designing.
INTRODUCTION TO
CAD/CAM

The Modern world of design, development,

manufacturing so on, in which we have stepped
can’t be imagined without interference of
computer. The usage of computer is such that,
they have become an integral part of these fields.
In the world market now the competition in not
only cost factor but also quality, consistency,
availability, packing, stocking, delivery etc. So are the requirements forcing industries to
adopt modern technique rather than local forcing the industries to adapt better techniques
like CAD / CAM / CAE, etc.The Possible basic way to industries is to have high quality
products at low costs is by using the computer Aided Engineering (CAE), Computer
Aided Design (CAD) And Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) set up. Further many
tools is been introduced to simplify & serve the requirement CATIA, PRO-E, UG are
some among many.
This penetration of technique concern has helped the manufacturers to

a) Increase productivity

b) Shortening the lead-time

c) Minimizing the prototyping expenses

d) Improving Quality & better products
CAD, CAM & CAE

CAD:-Computer-aided design (CAD) refers to the use of computer tools to assist

engineers, architects and other design professionals in their design activities. It is the
main geometry authoring tool within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) process
and involves both software and sometimes special-purpose hardware. Current packages
range from 2D vector based drafting systems to 3D parametric surface and solid design
modelers. CAD is sometimes translated as "computer-assisted drafting", "computer-aided
drafting", or a similar phrase. Related acronyms are CADD, which stands for "computer-
aided design and drafting"; CAID, for Computer-aided Industrial Design; and CAAD, for
"computer-aided architectural design". All these terms are essentially synonymous, but
there are some subtle differences in meaning.

Basically CAD is not just a drafting tool, its a very accurate and robust design tool too.
Due to the complexity of computations in design methodology, the power of computers is
leveraged to compute solutions to complex
problems like stress analysis, shear analysis,
thermal analysis and fluid flow analysis. The
CAD
offers
very

simple, easy to use, less time consuming and

clean methods to study and evaluate the design
process and arrive at a close-to-perfect design.CAD and CAM can even be used in food
processing.

CAM :- Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) refers to the use of computer systems

for the control of robotics and tools during the product manufacture. Integrating CAM
with CAD systems provides quicker and more efficient manufacturing processes. This
method is applied in different areas. In CNC manufacturing the CAM system is used to
simplify the machining and designing process. In most cases the CAM system will work
with a CAD design made in a 3D environment. The CNC programmer will just specify
the machining operations and the CAM system will create the CNC program. This
compatibility of CAD/CAM systems eliminates the need for redefining the work piece
configuration to the CAM system. In other words: CAM software usually comes with a
machine such as a lathe or chisel. The entire system tends to be extremely expensive. (A
lathe and computer system with software will cost in excess of $1 million). CAD/CAM
systems offer the advantages of increased programming accuracy, geometric
conformance to design parameters, ability to make minor and often major changes to part
configuration and programming metrics within the same system. CAD/CAM systems
utilize either "wireframe" or "solids" for the part feature generation necessary for post-
processing intermediate code files derived from cutter tool paths into usable "nc" code
readable by numerical control machines. Wireframe geometry can be either in two or
three dimensional planes, while solids are in 3d. CAD/CAM is used widely across the
world at schools and companies who design, innovate and manufacture new products.

CAE:- Computer-aided engineering (often referred to as CAE) is the use of

information technology for supporting engineers in tasks such as analysis, simulation,
design, manufacture, planning, diagnosis and repair. Software tools that have been
developed for providing support to these activities are considered CAE tools. CAE tools
are being used, for example, to analyze the robustness and performance of components
and assemblies. It encompasses simulation, validation and optimization of products and
manufacturing tools. In the future, CAE systems will be major providers of information
to help support design teams in decision making.

In regard to information networks,

CAE systems are individually
considered a single node on a total
information network and each node
may interact with other nodes on the
network.

The term CAE has also been

used by some in the past to describe the use of computer technology within engineering
in a broader sense than just engineering analysis. It was in this context that the term was
coined by Dr. Jason Lemon, founder of SDRC in the late 70's. This definition is however
better known today by the terms CAx and PLM.

CAE areas covered include:

 Stress analysis on components and assemblies using FEA (Finite Element

Analysis);
 Thermal and fluid flow analysis [[Computational fluid dynamics]] (CFD);
 Kinematics;
 Mechanical event simulation (MES).
 Analysis tools for process simulation for operations such as casting, molding, and
die press forming.
 Optimization of the product or process.

In general, there are three phases in any computer-aided engineering task:

 Pre-processing – defining the model and environmental factors to be applied to it.
(typically a finite element model, but facet, voxel and thin sheet methods are also
used)
 Analysis solver (usually performed on high powered computers)
 Post-processing of results (using visualization tools)

This cycle is iterated, often many times, either manually or with the use of commercial
optimization software.

Need for CAD, CAE & CAM :-

The usage of CAD CAE & CAM have

changed the over look of the industries and
developed healthy & standard competition , as could achieve target in lean
time and ultimately the product reaches market in estimated time with better
quality and consistency . In general view, it has lead to fast approach and
creative thinking.

ADVANTAGES:-

Cut off of the designing time

Cut off of the editing time
Cut off of the manufacturing time
High & controlled quality
Reduction of process cost.
Consistency
Maintenance of Universal accessing data
DRAW BACKS:-
 Requires skilled operators
 Initial setting & assumption consumes time
 Setting cost is more
 Over heads are high and
 Applicable if production is high
INTRODUCTION TO W9 ENGINE

W9 ENGINE
The constantly rising demands regarding performance, smooth operation, and
fuel economy have led to the advancement of existing engines and the
development of new engines. The W engines set exacting demands on design.
Large numbers of cylinders were adapted to the extremely compact dimensions
of the engine. In the process, more attention was paid to light weight design.

What Does the W Stand For?

With the aim of building even more compact engines with a large number of
cylinders, the design features of the V and VR engines were combined to produce
the W engines.

As with the V engines the cylinders are distributed to two banks. In the W9
engines, these cylinders are distributed to 3 banks.
BASIC PRINCIPLE FOUR STROKE ENGINE

The four-stroke engine has as the name implies four distinctive cycles, and it takes
two crankshaft revolutions to complete one four stroke cycle. The cycle are

Intake stroke; a combustion mixture of air and fuel is drawn past the open intake
valve as the piston descends to bottom dead center, increasing the volume and
creating negative pressure.

Compression stroke; all valves are closed and the piston moves towards to dead
center, compressing the charge before ignition take place.

Power stroke; as a result from the combustion of air fuel mixture, the pressure
pushes the piston towards bottom dead center.

Exhaust stroke; the burned gases are released by the open exhaust valve. Figure
below show the four-stroke principle.
INTRODUCTION TO CATIA

CATIA (Computer Aided Three

Dimensional Interactive Application) is a
multi-platform CAD/CAM/CAE commercial
software suite developed by French company
Dassault Systemes and marketed world-wide
by IBM. Written in the C++programming
language, CATIA is the cornerstone of the
Dassault Systemes PLM software suite. Which
is used to generate CAD model in this
assignment.

CATIA started as an in-house development by French aircraft manufacturer Avions

Marcel Dassault, at that time customer of the CADAMCAD software.

The software name was initially CATI (Conception Assistée Tridimensionnelle

Interactive the French meaning Interactive Aided Three Dimensional Design ), but was
renamed to CATIA in 1981. At that time Dassault created a subsidiary responsible for
the software development and marketing, and finalized a nonexclusive distribution
agreement with IBM.

CATIA is a robust application that enables me to create rich and complex designs. The
goals of the CATIA course is to teach you how to build parts and assemblies in CATIA,
and how to make simple drawings of those parts and assemblies. This course focuses on
the fundamental skills and concepts that enable me to create a solid foundation for my
designs.

CATIA is a feature-based, parametric solid modeling design tool that takes advantage of
the easy-to-learn in Windows graphical user interface .we can create fully associative
3-D solid models with or without constraints while utilizing automatic or user-defined
relations to capture design intent.
Feature-based :
Like an assembly is made up of a number of
individual parts ,a CATIA document is made
up of individual elements. The se elements are
called features. When creating a document, we
can add features such as pads ,pockets ,holes,
ribs, fillets, chamfers, and drafts. As the
features are created, they are applied directly
to the work piece.

Features can be classified as sketched based or

WHY WE PREFERD CATIA?

 The main advantages of CATIA that it is very user friendly software.

 From any different software we can import models and can be converted to

CATIA features.

 It has a powerful rendering option to make the object realistic.

 When it is impractical to get the desired shape/geometry in solid design (part

design), it can be easily developed in shape design module. As CATIA is a

interactive software so switching into different modules can possible at the

time of modeling.

 Developed to use in the aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and other

industries to design all type of rich &complex design.

 Dynamic view can be store to define different motion in kinematic.\

 Bidirectional associavity between assy, modeling & drafting.

 Powerful sheet metal options, surface to sheet conversion & tool design.

 Notable automobile &aerospace industries using CATIA are Volvo, Fiat,

Renault, Toyota, Honda, Ford, , Hyundai, LN&T, TATA motors and
Mahindra ,ISRO ,HAL & ADA.
THE STAGE BY STAGE DEVELOPMENT OF CAD
MODELS

In this era, the industries look for cost effectiveness and the man power efficiency
in any product development. This is possible only through the effective usage of
CAE/CAD/CAM software technology. This ensures the reduction in time as well
the manpower used for design and development of a product with improvement
in product quality.

This session deals with the explanation of CAD modeling of each part and the
functionality of those parts in the W9 ENGINE ASSEMBLY.

The flow of explanation of modeling of W9 engine is as follows:

1. Modeling of each part with the steps followed to generate the geometric
model and their function in the whole assembly.
2. Drafting & detailing of various parts of W9 engine assembly.
3. Detailing of each part and BOM of all the components are being presented.

DRAFTING OF ASSEMBLY
GROUP WORK ACTIVITIES
It is very important for an engineer to have a complete knowledge about
the task he is involved in for this, just having a theoretical; knowledge is
not enough. What is more important i.e. to do the work practically? For
this purpose working in a group make the task much easy and effective.
A group must consist of sincere, hardworking, dedicated, and intelligent
individuals.
Our group consists of four members Sigma Saikalyan, Aloknath
Patra, Nishant Mahadev Patil, Janmejay Dandsena who have worked
very hard and have given their best effort in producing this product, a
project on DESIGNING OF A W9- ENGINE MODEL USING CATIA.
each one showed his active participation and was involved right from
preparing the format, collecting data on v8- engine and its parts from various
sources, designing these parts and assembling them using CATIA, producing the
project report and presenting it.

Each one deserves the credit for the efforts put by him in completing this
task within the time given and with high efficiency.

CONCLUSION
While working on this project we came across details of both designing and

manufacturing. The designing of the V8 engine, has enriched us with knowledge about

model designing, drafting, assembly in the CAD/CAM software’s CATIA. , which has

raised our skill and self-confidence regarding any such type of project in future.

Never the less the designing of this engine enriched is with the technique of operation of

different designing skills. The designing process helped us to gain experience through

designing related activities like designing in 3D views, study of various drawing sheets,

drafting and mechanisms.

And at last we learned how to face and tackle with the problems that arise during the

course of completion of the project.

I am very much thankful to the faculties of CTTC…
