Grade 11 EMF and Internal Resistance of a Cell

Aim: To determine the emf and internal resistance of a cell

Apparatus: cell, voltmeter, ammeter, connecting wires, variable resistor

Experimental set-up:

V = E-Ir

V is the potential difference between the terminals of the cell

E is the emf of the cell whose internal resistance is r

I is the electric current through the circuit

• Vary the resistance of the variable resistor and find the voltage across it and the current in the
circuit.
• Repeat for different values of resistance of the variable resistor
• Plot the appropriate graph and find the value of E and r of the cell
