Oregon Trail Chapter July 2011 This years event was well attended. Nearly a third of OTC members were present to enjoy the fun. Some of the bikes making an appearance this year included Theos Norton.
Several others rode in for the good food, friends, and fun
We made it to Toms just fine, with a dry seat and excited anticipation of the day ahead. As it turned out, we were plenty early and had to wait an hour before everyone going on the ride arrived. The sky was still gray and it was cool but going to be a good day. Guess I didnt really have to say that, even when we get rained on, its a good day. We finally lined up, like the good little boys and girls we are, behind our mighty Chieftain, Tom Krise. I hope nobody minds if I hang on your backside Tom. Its a lot easier to keep up and I know I wont get lost. Not riding my old bike, Im a little self-conscious about taking a place at the head of the pack. The guys wouldnt like me going along on my 53 Servicar either as I know I wouldnt be able to keep up on the hills. Youre fine, Rosie, Tom grinned as he put his Chief into gear and led his motley crew onto the highway. We had a line of twelve riders and two passengers on a fair assortment of Harleys and Indians, with a few other brands scattered in the pack such as a Norton, BMW, Triumph and Honda. We rode through a back street in Salem heading for the Silver Falls highway. Tom took us on one of the routes that will be used for the Silver and Chrome Road Run this summer. Its a humdinger. He took us up hills and down hills; so steep it was like riding a roller coaster. The only problem I had with those was we didnt go fast enough! I love those hills, Whee!!! I thought about holding my arms out and flapping my wings when we sailed down those hills but I didnt want to show off. He led us past huge nurseries that spread out for miles, giving us a view of the rolling hills and mountains in the distance. We passed small towns with yards full of bright, flowers in every color imaginable and huge fields of alsike clover, the blossoms so thick they looked like a white, cotton quilt had been laid over them. We wound around tight corners and through the woods swaying back and forth with the road in joyous abandonment.
Oregon Trail Chapter July 2011 As we approached a stop sign, something flew off of Toms bike. It floated up into the air from the left side of his bike and waffled about before landing in front of my trike. At first, I thought it was a tin can as all my mind registered was a flash of blue and gray. I was able to dodge it with the front of my bike but it flew under one of my back wheels and that was all she wrote. As my Harley stomped that tin can, I realized it was the license plate off Toms Indian. I tried to stop but the riders behind were veering every which way to go around me and the side of the road was not wide enough to pull off. I slammed back into gear and hurried to catch Tom at the stop sign before he could take off again. Tom! Wait, youve lost your license plate! I shouted. He hurriedly rode back to retrieve his plate while the rest of us waited near the stop sign. About half way through the ride, Tom pulled over into a viewing area where we were treated to a gorgeous panorama of the surrounding hills. He looked over his plate and found it was in good shape but the blue glass buttons on the corners had not faired very well. One of them had a large chip taken out of it and the other three were scratched. Bummer of a deal but it could have been a lot worse. We got back to Tom and Stephanies just in time for lunch where we met with nine more people for a fantastic BBQ and licked the bean pots clean. Thanks to both of you for another great day. By the way, Tom, I really am sorry I ran over your plate but your Indian should know better than to try to scalp a Harley. Editors Note: On behalf of all those who attended this years BBQ, Id like to thank Tom and Stephanie for an enjoyable day spent with OTC family and friends. Correspondence/Business/Reports: May minutes were read and approved. Gary read the financial report provided by Tom. Chuck Hodson mentioned Jim Watts had passed away.
