Following the Little Kids’ Rodeo held in the small sheep arena on the Northeast
Montana Fairgrounds this past Saturday, the bigger kids took to the rodeo arena
for some events including pole bending, demonstrated here by Madelynn Tafatu.

Cardinals make a run for the state title

When it comes to the Montana
American Legion Baseball Tournament
anything can happen — who gets hot
and who’s not.
Four district champions go into
the tournament in hopes of winning the
crown. The district champions vying
for the state title were Laurel from the
east, Bitterroot Red Sox from the west,
Lewistown from the north and Butte
Miners from the south.
However, the number one seed
teams didn’t fare so well, except for
the Butte Miners. Laurel (36-16) was
eliminated after two losses, 11-5 to
Belgrade and 11-6 to Lewistown.
Bitterroot also finished with two
losses, 8-6 to the Billings Cardinals and
5-4 to Havre. Lewistown made it to
Friday where the Redbirds (43-22) were
knocked out by the Cardinals, 19-4.
How about those Cardinals? This
team is a feeder team for the Class AA
Billings Scarlets. The Cardinals had a
super state tournament. They opened
with that win over Bitterroot, then
followed that with a 7-3 loss to Butte.
After that big win over Lewistown, the
Cardinals eliminated the host Belgrade
Bandits in a high scoring affair, 13-11.
Butte (36-9) went on to win the
State Class A championship with a
12-2 victory over the Billings Cardinals
(37-19-1). The Miners started the
tournament with a 19-5 thumping
over Havre. Butte followed that with
the win over the Cardinals and handed
Belgrade its first loss of the tournament,
12-2. The Miners sent Havre packing
with a 15-5 loss. The Miners outscored
their opponents 61-15.
The Cardinals finished second,
followed by Havre (33-21-1) and
Belgrade (39-20).
In Billings, the Billings Royals and
Helena Senators battled for the State
Class AA championship. The Royals
(37-23) edged Helena (47-13) 4-3 for
the title.
The Royals opened with a 1-0
victory over the Bozeman Bucks,
then slipped past Great Falls (39-25)
12-11. Billings added a 4-3 win over
Helena in the undefeated semifinal
and whipped Kalispell (32-25) 17-5.
Helena opened with a 17-7 victory over
Lethbridge (12-23), shut out Kalispell
11-0, and eliminated the host Billings
Scarlets (34-24) 8-2 to advance into the
championship.
Missoula (32-26, the fourth seed
went 0-2, Kalispell finished third and
the Scarlets fourth.
Miles City will host the Eastern
A district tournament next year. The
state tournament will be hosted by
the eastern A. This would be a great
time for the Glasgow Reds to bid on
the tournament and host the state
tournament. It would be a great boost
for the Reds program.
