MATHEMATICS RESOURCE PACKAGE

A. Reviewing or Activity 1: Revisiting Rational Roots

presenting the new (Think-Pair-Share)
lesson Let the students answer the following questions.

Instruction: State whether the statement is True of False.

Justify your answer.

1. The roots of a polynomial equation in x are the values of

x that satisfy the equation.

2. One of the roots of the equation x4 – 3x2 + 2 = 0 is 1.

3. The equation 2x3 – 6x2 + x – 1 = 0 has no rational root.

4. Every polynomial equation of degree n has n – 1 real

roots.

5. The only rational root of the equation

x3 + 6x2 + 10x + 3 = 0 is 3.

Expected answer:
1. True 2. True 3. True 4. False (has at most
n)
5. False ( the only rational root is -3)

B. Establishing a
purpose for the Note: The teacher gives the following guide questions for
lesson students to answer.

 Given the equation x4 – x3 - 7x2 + 13x – 6 = 0,

is 1 a possible rational root? Why

Expected answer: yes, by applying Rational Root

Theorem

 Can you state Rational Root Theorem?

Expected answer: Let a0xn + an-1xn-1+ an-2xn-2+ . . .+

a2x2+ a1x +a0 = 0, an ≠ 0 and a1 an integer for all i, 0 ≤ i ≤
n, be a polynomial equation of degree n. If p/q, in lowest
terms, is a rational root of the equation, then p is a factor of
a0 and q is a factor of an.

 If 1 is a root of x4 – x3 - 7x2 + 13x – 6 = 0, can we say that

(x – 1) is a factor of the given equation? Why

Expected answer: yes, by Factor Theorem

 How do you write the roots -1, -2, and -3, of the equation
x3 + 6x2 + 11x + 6 = 0 in factored form?

Expected answer: (x + 1)(x + 2)(x +3)

 In general, if p, q, and r are the roots of the polynomial

P(x), then,
P(x) = (x – p)(x – q)(x – r).

C. Presenting Activity 2: Group Activity

examples of the
new lesson Note: Divide the class into 6 groups and then ask each group
to answer the given activity.

Given: x3 – 7x – 6 = 0
Instruction: Using Rational Root Theorem, find the
roots and then write the equation in factored
form.

Expected answer: (x + 1)(x – 3)(x + 2) = 0

Instructions: For each item below, write a polynomial equation

in factored form given its roots:

1. 1, -3, -6

2. ± 2, ± 7

3. ± 2, 3, 4

Expected answer:

1. (x - 1)(x + 3)(x + 6) = 0

2. (x – 2)(x – 2)(x + 7)(x – 7) = 0

3. (x – 2)(x + 2)(x – 3)(x – 4) = 0

F. Developing Mastery ACTIVITY 4: (Individual Activity)

Find all rational roots of the given polynomial equation and

then write the equation in factored form

x4 - 5x2 + 4 = 0

Expected answer: The roots are 2, -2, 1, -1

And the equation in factored form is
(x + 2)(x – 2)(x + 1)(x – 1) = 0

4. In our supermarkets You've probably used a

polynomial in your head more than once when shopping.
For example, you might want to know how much three kgs
of flour, two dozen bananas and three packets of bread
cost. Before you check the prices, construct a simple
polynomial, letting "f" denote the price of flour, "e" denote
the price of a dozen banana and "m" the price of one pac.
Of bread costs. It looks like this: 3f + 2e + 3m. Then you
do the calculations according to the MRP.

DISCUSSIONS:

The Rational Root Theorem

Let a0xn + an-1xn-1+ an-2xn-2+ . . .+ a2x2+ a1x +a0 = 0, an
≠ 0 and a1 an integer for all i, 0 ≤ i ≤ n, be a polynomial
equation of degree n. If p/q, in lowest terms, is a rational root
of the equation, then p is a factor of a0 and q is a factor of an.

Activity 2 (Solutions):

x3 – 7x – 6 = 0

Using Rational Root Theorem,

factors of -6 (p): ± 1, ± 2, ± 3, ± 6
factors of 1 (q): ± 1
possible roots (p/q): ± 1, ± 2, ± 3, ± 6
Using synthetic division, try the possible roots:

1 1 0 -7 -6
1 1 -6
1 1 -6 -12 not a root

-1 1 0 -7 -6
-1 1 6
1 -1 -6 0 root

x2 – x – 6 = 0 Depressed equation
(x – 3)(x + 2)=0 Factor
x = 3, x = -2 Apply Zero Product

Therefore, the roots are -1, 3, and -2 and the equation in

factored form is (x + 1)(x – 3)(x + 2) = 0 .
