Respiratory
Many serious infectious diseases result from host respiratory tract
exposure to bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic pathogens. After
pathogenic microbes infect the respiratory system, they may also
build in pulmonary mucosa or fluids and be expelled by respiratory
activity to further spread infection. The range of disease symptoms
include common cold, flu, flu-like illness, croup, bronchiolitis,
pneumonia, and tuberculosis depending on location in the
respiratory tract.

Immunofluorescence, ELISA, lateral flow and other assay formats

leverage species and strain specific antibodies for pathogen positive
identification, localization, or quantification.

Gastrointestinal
The complex structure and dynamic function of the
gastrointestinal tract exposes the tissue to a variety
of environmental insults including carcinogens and
infectious agents. Foodborne illness may be caused

Rod-shaped Bacteria.

Vector-borne
From the perspective of infectious diseases, vectors are the transmitters
of disease-causing organisms; that is, they carry parasite, bacteria, or
viral pathogens from one host to another.

The main diseases and their vectors include Malaria (Anopheline

mosquitoes), Dengue (Aedes mosquitoes, Chikungunya fever, Zika virus
fever, Yellow fever, West Nile fever, Japanese encephalitis (all transmitted
by mosquitoes), tick-borne encephalitis, Chagas disease (triatomine
bugs), Leishmaniasis (sandflies) and Schistosomiasis (snails). According
to the World Health Organization (WHO), vector-borne diseases account
for more than 17% of all infectious diseases, causing more than 700,000
deaths annually. Most of these diseases are concentrated in tropical and
subtropical areas of the world with malaria contributing to much
of the morbidity and mortality.

Herpesviruses
(HHV)
Of the approximately 107 known herpesviruses, 9 infect only
humans: herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-
2), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV),
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpes virus 6A and 6B, human
herpesvirus 7, and Kaposi’s sarcoma virus or human herpesvirus 8.

While herpesviruses can cause skin related sores and blisters, they
also can establish latent infection within specific tissues that are
characteristic for each virus and can cause further complications.

For example, Herpes (HHV4) / Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is most

commonly associated with Infectious Mononucleosis with symptoms
of sore throat, headache, malaise, fatigue and also lymphadenopathy
and in some splenomegally, but EBV is also associated with
malignancies such as Burkitts Lymphoma and Nasopharyngial
Carcinoma.

HHV-5 is responsible for a small fraction of mononucleosis cases with symptoms

identical to those caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. In immunocompromised
individuals, more severe symptoms can occur, such as encephalitis and mycocarditis.
HHV-5 poses a greater threat to newborns and infants. If a mother is first infected
with HHV-5 during pregnancy, there is a chance that the virus will be passed to
the fetus. As a result of this, about 20% of infected infants will have long-term
complications such as vision loss, hearing loss, or mental disabilities.

Human Herpes Virus 6 (HHV-6)

HHV-6 and HHV-7 are T-lymphotropic beta-herpesviruses that commonly infect humans early in life. Seroprevalence of HHV-6 has been reported
as being >80% in children >2 years old.

Kaposi-Sarcoma Herpes (HHV-8)
Kaposi's sarcoma is caused by a virus called the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as the Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus
(KSHV). The virus is thought to be spread during sex, through blood or saliva, or from a mother to her baby during birth.

Immunocytochemistry Analysis:
Representative lot data. Immunofluorescent analysis of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated
herpesvirus/human herpesvirus 8- (KSHV/HHV8-) infected BCBL-1 lymphoma cells was
performed using anti-HHV8 LNA-1, clone LN53 and visualized with Goat anti-Rat IgG
Antibody, Cy3 conjugate (red). Actin filaments have been labeled with Alexa Fluor®
488-conjugated phalloidin (green). Nucleus was stained with DAPI (blue). This antibody
detected HHV8 LNA-1-positive nuclear bodies.

Hepatitis Viruses
Viral hepatitis, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C,
are a group of distinct diseases that affect the liver. Hepatitis A
virus is usually transmitted person-to-person by the fecal-oral
route or through consumption of contaminated food or water.
Symptoms, including fatigue, disrupted appetite, gastrointestinal
distress and jaundice, that typically clears after two months.

Hepatitis B virus is transmitted by body fluids. For some people,

hepatitis B is a short-term illness, but for others, it can become
a long-term, chronic infection leading to serious health issues,
like cirrhosis or liver cancer. Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused
by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C virus is strictly blood-
borne and can lead to relatively short low risk infection or chronic
potentially life-threatening disease.

Human Infectious Disease Control
and Calibrator Antibodies for Assay
Development
Monoclonal antibody alternative to infected human plasma
Assays developed for diagnosis and monitoring infectious diseases require robust, stable and readily available
control and calibration materials to maximize precision and sensitivity. Traditional manufacturing of these vital
materials depended upon discovering source plasma units from naturally infected individuals, an inconsistent
and increasingly difficult to find resource. Plasma sourced antibodies vary from pool to pool in titer, avidity, and
epitope specificity forcing additional manufacturing steps such as defibrination, delipidation, and filtration with
added expense and effort.
Human monoclonal antibodies against infectious disease targets offer CK-028 HAV IgM
a secure and convenient solution over source plasma. Fully human IgM 1.5

and IgG antibodies manufactured in industrial cell culture volumes replace

antibodies found in human plasma from infected individuals and offer: 1

Sexually
Transmitted
Diseases (STDs)
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are among the most common
contagious diseases, with infections passed from one person, most
commonly but not exclusively, through sexual contact. The causes
of STDs are bacteria, parasites, and viruses.

There are more than 20 types of STDs, including Chlamydia,

Gonorrhea, HPV, Genital Herpes, HIV/AIDS, Syphilis, Trichomonas,
Hepatitis, etc. Although most STDs affect both sexes, often
health consequences are more severe for pregnant women and
their babies. More than 65 million Americans have an incurable
STD. Each year, 20 million new cases are reported with half of
these infections among people ages 15 to 24. Although mostly
preventable and treatable, STDs can cause a range of acute and
chronic, long-term consequences, even death.

Nosocomial and
Other Diseases
Due to the growing health threat posed by nosocomial
infections, there is increased research demand for
antibodies targeting uncommon hospital bacteria and
bacterial resistance. A number of bacterial-specific
antibodies are proving useful in this disease research.
Antibodies to various genera of enterobacteriae including
Enterobacter, Moraganella, and Providencia are now
available for use. Also valuable are antibodies widely
targeting bacteria, such as bacterial peptidoglycan and
multi-drug resistance (MDR) structures.
