EXPERIMENT #1
CONVERGENT FAULT
Objectives:
Describe the movement of converging plate boundaries using models.

What you need:

A small cardboard box
Very fine sand

What to do:
1. Video yourself doing this activity.
2. Cut the box into two half-boxes, making sure that one is shorter than the other.
3. Place the shorter half-box inside the longer one and pour sand inside. Shake the box a bit
to level the sand surface. You are set to begin.
4. Slowly push the boxes towards each other.

Processing Questions:
1. What happened to the sand after pushing the two half-boxes to each other?

2. What do you think will form during this plate boundary?

EXPERIMENT #3
TRANSFORM FAULT

Objectives:
Describe the movement of transform plate boundaries using models.

What you need:

Two sheets of folder
Very fine sand

What to do:
1. Video yourself doing this activity.
2. Place the sheets of folder on a flat surface, side by side.
3. Pour the sand along the boundary of the two sheets.
4. Now, move the sheets in opposite directions.

Processing Questions:
1. What happened to the sand after moving the two sheets of folder in opposite direction?

EXPERIMENT #4
MAGMA FLOUR

Objectives:
Determine the properties of magma.

What you need:

½ cup of water
Few tablespoons of flour

Procedures:
1. Place about 1/2 cup (125 mL) of water in a saucepan over medium heat.
2. Add 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of white flour (this represents silica)
3. Stir while the mixture comes close to boiling. It should thicken like gravy because the
gluten in the flour becomes polymerized into chains during this process.
4. Now you’re going to add more “silica” to see how this changes the viscosity of your
magma. Take another 4 teaspoons (20 mL)of flour and mix it thoroughly with about 4
teaspoons (20 mL) of water in a cup and then add all of that mixture to the rest of the
water and flour in the saucepan.
5. Stir while bringing it back up to nearly boiling temperature, and then allow it to cool.
This mixture should slowly become much thicker — something like porridge — because
there is more gluten and more chains have been formed (see the photo).

Processing Questions:
1. What did you notice to the mixture when it cools?

________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
2. Is the mixture the same as magma? Why or why not?

3. In your own words, how do magma form?

ICE ICE BABY!!

What you need:

Ice cube
1 tablespoon of salt
Glass cup

Procedures:
1. Get an ice cube and put it in a glass.
2. Put a teaspoon of salt to the ice cube and leave for two hours.

Processing Questions
1. What do you notice?

EXPERIMENT #6
Modeling Mantle Convection Currents

Materials
■ Large plastic container or beaker ■ Rubber band
■ Food coloring ■ Small beaker/small container
■ Small piece of aluminum foil ■ Several pieces of paper about 0.5 cm square
■ Cold water ■ Hot water

Procedure
1. Fill the large plastic container 3/4 full of cold water.
2. Add 4 drops of food coloring to the small beaker and fill with hot water.
3. Cover the top of the small beaker with aluminum foil and secure with a rubber band.
4. Carefully lower the beaker into the beaker of cold water.
5. Sprinkle about 15 pieces of paper on the surface of the water.
6. Without disturbing the water, use the tip of the pencil to make two holes in the aluminum foil
covering the beaker.
7. Observe the contents of the small beaker as well as the paper pieces on the surface of the
water.
8. Write a hypothesis of what you will observe.

______________________________________________________________________________

• A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work. • Most of the time a hypothesis is
written like this: "If ____[I do this] _____, then _____[this]_____ will happen."

EXPERIMENT #7
Activity 1
Let’s Fit it!
Objectives:
•Find clues to solve a problem.
•Recognize how the Continental Drift Theory is developed.

Materials:
old newspaper or magazine
scotch tape

Procedure:
1. Video yourself while doing this activity.
2. Obtain a set of torn newspaper page or magazine page.
3. Try to fit the pieces together.
4. Use a tape to connect the pieces.

Guide Questions:
1. What features of the newspaper helped you to connect the pieces perfectly?

________________________________________________________________________
2. How do the lines of prints or texts in the newspaper help you to confirm that you have
reassembled the newspaper/magazine page?
