Number Series

INTRODUCTION
Every number series requires building in a logic sensing of following sorts of series
1. ADDITION SERIES : It is that sort of a series in which some numbers (constant, increasing or
decreasing) are being added to find next term of series
2. SUBTRACTION SERIES : It is that sort of series in which there is a constant, increasing or
decreasing difference in the consecutive terms of the series
3. MULTIPLICATION SERIES : It is that sort of series in which the consecutive term are obtained by
multiplying the previous terms or known term by constant, increasing or decreasing(series) sort of a
number
4. DIVISION SERIES : It is that sort of a series in which the consecutive terms are obtained by
dividing the previous or known terms by constant, increasing or decreasing value .
5. POWER SERIES : It is that sort of the series where the terms may be broken into a square or cube
of a series pattern
6. SPECIAL SERIES : It is series formed from special numbers which may be prime.
7. MIXED SERIES : It is mixture of two or more than two series in the same single series in which
individual series may be governed by combination series
8. COMBINATION SERIES : It is a combination of two or more than two mathematical operation
in the one given series.
NOTE: Addition and subtraction and also multiplication and division series are user specific.
Here are some illustrations for you to go ahead.

Alphabets in reverse order :

Directions : (1 to 10) Find the missing term(s) :

Ex.1 B, E, H, ?
(1) K (2) L (3) J (4) M
Sol. (1) In the given series, every letter is moved three steps forward to obtain the corresponding letters
of the next term. So, the missing term is K.

Ex.2 Q, N, K, ?, E
(1) H (2) I (3) J (4) G
Sol. (1) In the given series, every letter is moved three steps backward to obtain the corresponding letters
of the next term. So, the missing term is H.

Ex.3 A, Y, D, W, G, U, J, ?
(1) R (2) T (3) S (4) P
Sol. (3) The given sequence consists of two series :
. A, D, G, J in which each letter is moved three steps forward to obtain the next term
. Y, W, U, ? in which each letter is moved two steps backward to obtain the next term.
So, the missing term would be S.

Ex.5 AD, EI, JO, PV, ?

(1) VD (2) WC (3) WD (4) VE
Sol. (3) The first letter of subsequent groups have a difference of 4, 5 and 6 places respectively, whereas
the second letter of the subsequent groups has a difference of 5, 6, and 7 places respectively, Therefore,
on following the same pattern, we get ‘WD’ as the next term which would replace the question
mark.

Ex.6 AB, BA, ABD, DBA, PQRS, ?

(1) SRQP (2) SRPQ (3) SQRP (4) RSQP
Sol. (1) The first term is reversed to get second term. The third term is reversed to get the fourth term.
Similarly, to get the sixth term, we reverse the fifth term. So, the missing term would be SRQP.

Ex.7 HEJ, JGL, LIN, NKP, ?

(1) MOR (2) PNS (3) PMR (4) NPT
Sol. (3) First letter of each group differs by 2 letters. Second letter of each group differs by 2 letters.
Third letter of each group differs by 2 letters. All the letters differ in the forward direction. Hence,
the next choice would be PMR.

Ex.8 XYQ, ZAR, BCS, DET, ?

(1) GFU (2) FUG (3) FZU (4) FGU
Sol. (4) Here, first two terms of every group of letters are in continuation, like XY, ZA, BC, DE, and the
third letter of each group is again in forward continuation,
i.e. Q, R, S, T. Hence, the term replacing the question mark would be FGU.

Ex.11 ABD, DGK, HMS, NTB, SBL, ZKW

(1) NTB (2) DGK (3) SBL (4) ZKW
Sol. (1) First letter of first, second, third,.........terms is moved three, four, five, ........steps forward
respectively. Similarly, second letter is moved five, six, seven,......steps forward respectively and
third letter is moved seven, eight, nine,........steps forward respectively. Hence, NTB is the wrong
term and should be replaced by MTB.

Ex.12 EPV, FQW, GRX, HTY, ITZ

(1) FQW (2) GRX (3) HTY (4) ITZ
Sol. (3) In every term, first second and third letter is in alphabetical order to its next term respectively.
Fourth term is not following the same rule. Hence, HTY is the wrong term and should be replaced
by HSY.

Ex.13 D4V, G10T, J20R, M43P, P90N

(1) P90N (2) G10T (3) J20R (4) D4V
Sol. (2) First letter of every term is moved three steps forward in each next term. Second number of
every term of the pattern  × 2 + 1, × 2 + 2, × 2 + 3,............and third letter of every term is moved
two steps backward. Hence, G10T is the wrong term and should be replaced by G9T.
