1 Incorrect vehicle speed sensor configuration


Solution: S00000824

Verification
Conditions
• Turn keyswitch ON.
• Connect the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
Action
• Use the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
• Verify the parameters match the vehicle configuration.
• Transmission Setup -Top Gear Transmission Ratio
• Vehicle Speed Source -Rear Axle Ratio
• Vehicle Speed Source -Tire Size
• Vehicle Speed Source - Vehicle Speed Sensor Type
• For a vehicle speed source that is a mulitplexed input, check that the engine ECM multiplexed component
enables and source addresses match the OEM VECU multiplexed component enables and source addresses.
Specification
• If the settings displayed by the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent do not match the
vehicle configuration, then proceed to the Repair section.

• Modify the vehicle configuration settings to match the vehicle configuration.

Validation
• Connect all components
• Connect the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
• Disable the fault code.
• Operate the engine within the "Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code" found in the Overview section of the
troubleshooting procedure.
• Verify that the fault code is no longer active.
• Check ECM Calibration Revision History
• Use the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent to find the current ECM code and revision
number in the ECM.
• Compare the ECM code and revision number in the ECM to the calibration revisions listed in the ECM Calibration
Revision History Database for applicable changes related to this fault code.
• Refer to ECM Calibration Revision History Database.

2 Vehicle speed sensor tampering


Solution: S00000825

Verification
Conditions
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor from the OEM wiring harness.
Action
• Inspect the pins and connectors for damage. Refer to Procedure 019-361
• Verify proper installation of the vehicle speed sensor.
• Verify the vehicle speed sensor for the proper adjustment for magnetic sensor. Refer to Procedure 019-091
• Verify the vehicle speed sensor for the proper adjustment for digital sensor. Refer to Procedure 019-090
• Verify that no external device is connected in place of the vehicle speed sensor
• Verify that there is no evidence that tampering with the vehicle speed sensor has taken place.
• Refer to the circuit diagram or wiring diagram for connector pin identification.
Specification
• If signs of tampering or incorrect installation has been found, then proceed to the Repair section.

Repair or replace only the components that were found to be out of specification.
• Replace the digital vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Procedure 019-090
• Replace the magnetic vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Procedure 019-091
• Repair or remove the tampering device or any external device.

• Connect all components
• Connect the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
• Disable the fault code.

3 Vehicle speed sensor open circuit check


Solution: S00000826

Verification
Conditions
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor from the OEM wiring harness.
• Disconnect the OEM wiring harness connector from the ECM.
Action
• Inspect the pins and connectors for damage. Refer to Procedure 019-361
• Measure the resistance of the magnetic vehicle speed sensor SIGNAL (+) wire between the OEM wiring harness
ECM connector and the OEM wiring harness magnetic vehicle speed sensor connector.
• Measure the resistance of the magnetic vehicle speed sensor SIGNAL (-) wire between the OEM harness ECM
connector and the OEM harness magnetic vehicle speed sensor connector.
• Refer to the circuit diagram or wiring diagram for connector pin identification.
Specification
• A malfunctioning OEM wiring harness has been detected if the resistance is greater than the following
specification: 10 Ω

• Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor from the OEM wiring harness.
• Disconnect the OEM wiring harness connector from the ECM.
Action
• Inspect the pins and connectors for damage. Refer to Procedure 019-361
• Measure the resistance between the magnetic vehicle speed sensor SIGNAL (+) at the OEM wiring harness ECM
connector and ground.
• Measure the resistance between the magnetic vehicle speed sensor SIGNAL (-) at the OEM wiring harness ECM
connector and ground.
• Refer to the circuit diagram or wiring diagram for connector pin identification.
Specification
• A malfunctioning OEM wiring harness has been detected if the resistance is less than the following specification:
100k Ω

Conditions
• Turn keyswitch OFF.
• Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor from the OEM wiring harness.
• Disconnect the OEM wiring harness connector from the ECM.
Action
• Inspect the pins and connectors for damage. Refer to Procedure 019-361
• Measure the resistance between the magnetic vehicle speed sensor SIGNAL (+) pin at the OEM harness ECM
connector and all other pins in that connector.
• Measure the resistance between the magnetic vehicle speed sensor SIGNAL (-) pin at the OEM harness ECM
connector and all other pins in that connector.
• Refer to the circuit diagram or wiring diagram for connector pin identification.
Specification
• A malfunctioning OEM wiring harness has been detected if the resistance is less than the following specification:
100k Ω

• Turn keyswitch OFF.
Action
• Remove the vehicle speed sensor from the transmission.
Refer to OEM Service Manual
• Inspect the pins and connectors for damage. Refer to Procedure 019-361
• Inspect the gear or tone wheel on the rear of the transmission where the speed sensor picks up the speed signal.
Refer to OEM Service Manual
Specification
• If any damage or defects to the tone wheel or gear are found, then proceed to the Repair section.
• If any slippage of the tone wheel or gear relative to the shaft is found, then proceed to the Repair section.

• Connect all components.
• Turn keyswitch ON.
• Connect the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
Action
• Use the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent to read the fault codes.
• Use the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent to find the current ECM code and revision
number in the ECM.
• Compare the ECM code and revision number in the ECM to the calibration revision listed in the ECM calibration
revision history for applicable changes.
Specification
• If a calibration update for this fault code is available, the ECM calibration revision must be that revision or higher.

Repair
• Prior to downloading the ECM calibration, check to see that all job images and all other troubleshooting has been
documented as downloading an ECM calibration will remove the fault codes on the ECM.
• Download the updated ECM calibration code. Refer to Procedure 019-032

Validation
• Connect all components
• Connect the recommended Cummins® electronic service tool or equivalent.
• Disable the fault code.
• Operate the engine within the "Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code" found in the Overview section of the
troubleshooting procedure.
