Speaker2: [00:01:08] The master.

Speaker1: [00:01:09] Gives Jackie.

Speaker2: [00:01:10] Elaborate.

Speaker1: [00:01:11] Instructions. He tells him how to stand, how to move, how to
punch, how to block.

Speaker2: [00:01:19] Jackie can't remember.

Speaker1: [00:01:20] Everything. So he creates a mnemonic to help him. He makes a

song that includes all.

Speaker2: [00:01:28] The teacher's instructions.

Speaker1: [00:01:30] He sings.

Speaker2: [00:01:30] It every.

Speaker1: [00:01:31] Day.

Speaker2: [00:01:31] To trigger his memory.

Speaker1: [00:01:34] He repeats the song again and again and again. And again and
again. The repetition seems redundant, but it helps Jackie.

Speaker2: [00:01:44] Remember what to.

Speaker1: [00:01:45] Do. The song creates many visual associations in his mind. It
helps him to.
Speaker2: [00:01:51] Picture what.

Speaker1: [00:01:52] He should do. Finally, Jackie has a boxing fight. As he fights, he
sings his silly little song. And it works. He beats Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson goes down.
Jackie is.

Speaker2: [00:02:09] The winner.

Speaker1: [00:02:10] Finally, Jackie has proficiency in something. Let's go back to the
beginning, this time with some questions to help you.

Speaker2: [00:02:21] Trigger your memory. All right. Here we go. Jackie has never had.

Speaker1: [00:02:26] Proficiency in anything. Has Jackie been good at something in his
life? No. Up till now, Jackie has never had skill with anything. Has Jackie had
proficiency with basketball? No. Jackie cannot play basketball well. Has Jackie had a
proficiency in football? No. Jackie can't play football either. Jackie has not had
proficiency in anything, nothing in his entire life. Up till now, he's tried a lot of things, too,
but he's always.

Speaker2: [00:03:01] Failed at everything.

Speaker1: [00:03:04] What's Jackie like?

Speaker2: [00:03:05] What kind of person is he?

Speaker1: [00:03:07] Is he a smooth guy? Is he calm and cool and confident? Is he like
James Bond? No. Jackie is not a smooth guy. He's not like James Bond. He's the
opposite, actually.

Speaker2: [00:03:19] He's a very vulgar guy. Is Jackie very polite?

Speaker1: [00:03:24] No, Jackie is not polite.

Speaker2: [00:03:25] He's vulgar.

Speaker1: [00:03:27] So what kind of things does Jackie do? Why is he vulgar? Well,
he picks his nose. He puts.

Speaker2: [00:03:32] His finger into.

Speaker1: [00:03:32] His nose in public. Other people can see him. He scratches his
butt. Right.

Speaker2: [00:03:38] He spits on the street. He's a very vulgar guy. He always tells
dirty jokes to. Does he wear fashionable clothes? Does he wear serious.

Speaker1: [00:03:52] Clothes like a suit.

Speaker2: [00:03:54] Or a.

Speaker1: [00:03:54] Business pants and business.

Speaker2: [00:03:58] Attire?

Speaker1: [00:03:59] No.

Speaker2: [00:03:59] Jackie wears.

Speaker1: [00:04:00] Silly clothes.

Speaker2: [00:04:01] His clothes are foolish. They're stupid. He wears very silly.

Speaker1: [00:04:05] Clothes, for example.

Speaker2: [00:04:06] His pants are too short usually.

Speaker1: [00:04:08] And his.

Speaker2: [00:04:09] Shirts, they're too.

Speaker1: [00:04:10] Long. His clothes look kind of silly, though. He's never been
proficient at anything. Jackie wants to be. He wants to be good at something. He wants
to have skill and something. He decides to become.

Speaker2: [00:04:22] A boxer, a fighter.

Speaker1: [00:04:24] He finds a boxing.

Speaker2: [00:04:25] Master, a boxing teacher. The master gives.

Speaker1: [00:04:29] Jackie elaborate instructions. Does he give him simple

instructions? No. The instructions are not simple.

Speaker2: [00:04:37] The Masters teachings are very complicated. They're very.

Speaker1: [00:04:41] Complex.

Speaker2: [00:04:42] They are elaborate. What kind of instructions are they? Well,
they're elaborate instructions. Very difficult to remember.

Speaker1: [00:04:50] He tells Jackie how to stand, how to move, how to punch, how to
block.

Speaker2: [00:04:55] These are very elaborate instructions. Jackie can't remember
everything.

Speaker1: [00:04:59] Because they're.

Speaker2: [00:04:59] Too elaborate, so he.

Speaker1: [00:05:01] Creates a mnemonic to help.

Speaker2: [00:05:05] Himself remember.

Speaker1: [00:05:07] Does he create a song as a mnemonic? Yes, he does. Does he
write down and make a list as a pneumonic? No, that doesn't help him. Remember, his
pneumonic is a song. He makes a song.

Speaker2: [00:05:21] And the words.

Speaker1: [00:05:22] Of the song tell him what to do, how to fight. That's his
pneumonic.

Speaker2: [00:05:25] That's how he remembers.

Speaker1: [00:05:27] He sings it.

Speaker2: [00:05:28] Every day to trigger his memory. Does he want to forget?

Speaker1: [00:05:32] No.

Speaker2: [00:05:33] He wants to trigger his memory.

Speaker1: [00:05:35] He wants to start his memory.

Speaker2: [00:05:36] He wants his memory to work all the time.

Speaker1: [00:05:39] So he sings this song.

Speaker2: [00:05:40] To trigger it.

Speaker1: [00:05:41] He wants to.

Speaker2: [00:05:42] Trigger his memory.

Speaker1: [00:05:43] Constantly, all the time.

Speaker2: [00:05:45] Every time he starts to.

Speaker1: [00:05:46] Forget, he sings the song.

Speaker2: [00:05:48] To trigger his memory.

Speaker1: [00:05:49] Again. He repeats the song again and again and again and again
and again. Is this singing redundant? Is it too much repetition? Well, it seems
redundant.

Speaker2: [00:06:03] Other people think it's redundant.

Speaker1: [00:06:05] They think, Oh, he sings the song too much. He's repeating that
song too much. It's redundant one times enough, but actually it's not redundant. The
repetition helps him. It seems redundant, but it's not. The song actually creates many
visual associations in his mind. When he sings the song, it makes him think of images
he can.

Speaker2: [00:06:28] Picture.

Speaker1: [00:06:29] Himself fighting.

Speaker2: [00:06:30] He pictures how.

Speaker1: [00:06:31] He should stand, he.

Speaker2: [00:06:33] Pictures.

Speaker1: [00:06:33] How he should move. These are visual associations. So the song
triggers his memory by making many visual associations, many pictures in his mind, so
he knows what to do all the time. Finally, Jackie decides to test his fighting skill. He has
a boxing match. He has a fight with Mike Tyson.

Speaker2: [00:06:59] What does he do during the fight?

Speaker1: [00:07:00] Does he sing a silly song.

Speaker2: [00:07:02] During the.

Speaker1: [00:07:02] Fight? Oh, yes, he does. Is the song.

Speaker2: [00:07:05] A serious song?

Speaker1: [00:07:07] No, actually, his song.

Speaker2: [00:07:08] Is not serious.

Speaker1: [00:07:09] It sounds silly. It's kind of a funny little song. He looks silly the way
he dresses. And his song is also kind of silly. Kind of foolish.

Speaker2: [00:07:17] Not serious.

Speaker1: [00:07:19] Does the silly song help him? Yes, it does. He beats Mike Tyson.
He's the winner. Mike Tyson, boom goes down and Jackie.

Speaker2: [00:07:28] Is the winner.

Speaker1: [00:07:29] What does this mean? Does this mean Jackie is good at boxing,
good at fighting? Yes, it does.

Speaker2: [00:07:35] Therefore, does it.

Speaker1: [00:07:36] Mean that Jackie has proficiency in something finally? Does he
finally have skill? Is he finally good at something? Yes. Jackie has proficiency in boxing.
He has proficiency in fighting, or to use the adjective. He is proficient. He is a proficient
fighter. He is a proficient boxer. Okay, that's all with the questions one more time. Listen
again, hopefully this will help.

Speaker2: [00:08:04] You really remember.

Speaker1: [00:08:06] At the end of this little final retelling, I want you to stop this and I
want you.

Speaker2: [00:08:11] To try to retell the story, tell the story.

Speaker1: [00:08:14] Again.

Speaker2: [00:08:15] In your own words.

Speaker1: [00:08:16] Everything does not need to be exactly correct, but try to use.

Speaker2: [00:08:20] And remember.

Speaker1: [00:08:21] Some of the new vocabulary.

Speaker2: [00:08:23] Here we go one more time. Jackie has never had.

Speaker1: [00:08:26] Proficiency in anything.

Speaker2: [00:08:29] Everything he's tried.

Speaker1: [00:08:30] He has failed. Jackie is not a smooth guy. He's not like James
Bond. In fact, he's very vulgar. He always.

Speaker2: [00:08:41] Tells dirty.

Speaker1: [00:08:41] Jokes. He picks his nose and scratches his butt and spits on the
street.

Speaker2: [00:08:48] And he also wears silly clothes. For example, his pants are too
short and his shirts are too long.

Speaker1: [00:08:56] He's never been proficient at anything, but he wants to be. He
finds a boxing teacher.
Speaker2: [00:09:03] The master gives.

Speaker1: [00:09:04] Jackie elaborate instructions. He tells Jackie how to stand, how to
move, how to punch, how to block.

Speaker2: [00:09:12] Jackie can't remember everything.

Speaker1: [00:09:13] It's too.

Speaker2: [00:09:14] Elaborate.

Speaker1: [00:09:15] So he creates a mnemonic device, something to.

Speaker2: [00:09:19] Help him remember.

Speaker1: [00:09:19] He creates a pneumonic to help. He makes a song that includes

all the teaching instructions.

Speaker2: [00:09:26] He sings it every day to trigger his memory.

Speaker1: [00:09:31] He repeats the song again and again and again. And again and
again. The repetition seems redundant, but it's not. It helps jockey.

Speaker2: [00:09:40] Remember what to.

Speaker1: [00:09:41] Do.

Speaker2: [00:09:42] The song creates.

Speaker1: [00:09:43] Makes many visual associations in his mind. It helps him.

Speaker2: [00:09:48] Picture.

Speaker1: [00:09:48] What to do. Finally, Jackie has a fight with Mike Tyson. During the
fight, Jackie sings his silly song. It works. Jackie beats Mike Tyson. Finally, Jackie has
proficiency in something. Okay. Please stop this now.

Speaker2: [00:10:08] And try to remember the story, retell the.

Speaker1: [00:10:11] Story, tell it again, and try to use all of this new.

Speaker2: [00:10:14] Vocabulary in a correct.

Speaker1: [00:10:16] Way. When you finish trying to retell.

Speaker2: [00:10:19] Start.

Speaker1: [00:10:19] It again and listen to my story.

Speaker2: [00:10:21] Again.

Speaker1: [00:10:21] And then stop it and.

Speaker2: [00:10:22] Then try to retell.

Speaker1: [00:10:23] It again. Do this a few times. It will help you a lot so that you.

Speaker2: [00:10:27] Both remember the vocabulary.

Speaker1: [00:10:29] And know how to use it. And I'll tell it quickly.

Speaker2: [00:10:32] Through one more time.

Speaker1: [00:10:33] Now and then we're finished.

Speaker2: [00:10:35] Jackie has never had proficiency in anything.

Speaker1: [00:10:38] Everything he has tried, he has failed. Jackie is not a smooth guy.
He's not like James Bond. In fact.

Speaker2: [00:10:45] He's very vulgar.

Speaker1: [00:10:46] He always tells.

Speaker2: [00:10:47] Dirty.

Speaker1: [00:10:48] Jokes. He picks his nose and scratches his butt and spits on the
street.

Speaker2: [00:10:53] He also wears silly clothes. His pants are too short and his shirts
are too long. He's never been proficient.

Speaker1: [00:10:59] At anything, but he wants to be. He finds a boxing master. The
master gives Jackie elaborate instructions. He tells him how to stand, how to move, how
to punch, how to block. It's so elaborate.

Speaker2: [00:11:12] Jackie can't remember.

Speaker1: [00:11:13] Everything. So he creates a pneumonic. He makes a song to help

him remember. He sings.

Speaker2: [00:11:20] It every.

Speaker1: [00:11:20] Day.

Speaker2: [00:11:21] To trigger his memory.

Speaker1: [00:11:23] He repeats the song again and again and again. And again and
again. The repetition seems redundant, but it's not redundant.

Speaker2: [00:11:30] It helps him remember, and it works.

Speaker1: [00:11:32] The song creates many visual associations in his mind. He can
picture what to do. Finally, Jackie has a fight with Mike Tyson. During the fight, he sings
his silly song again. It works. He beats Mike Tyson. Finally, Jackie has proficiency in
something. Okay, stop this again. Again, try to retell.

Speaker2: [00:11:57] The story yourself.
