Chapter : 2 : Conduction-Steady-State One Dimension IJI

Thickness of wood, Le= 16mm=0.016m

Temperature of hot fluid (air), thf = 25 ° C
Temperature cold fluid (air), tcf = -3 ° C
Heat transfer coefficients :
Hot fluid (air), hhf =11 W/m2° C
Cold fluid (air), hcf = 30 W/m2° C
Thermal conductivities :
Brick, kA = 0.99 W/m° C
Foam, k = 0.022 W/m° C
B
Wood, kc= 0.17 W/m° C
Total wall area, A= 85 m 2
(i) Rate of heat transfer, Q :
Q = UA(thf- tcf)
The overall heat transfer co-efficient (U) may be found from the following relation :
1 1 LA LB 4: 1
-=-+-+-+-+-
u hhf k A kB kc hif
1 0.22 0.09 0.06 1

11 0.99 0.022 0.17 30
=0.091 + 0.222 + 4.091 + 0.094 + 0.033 =4.531

U = _l_ = 0.2207W/m 2 ° C
4.531
Q =0.2207 x 85 [25 - (-3)] = 525.26 W (Ans.)
(ii) Temperature of inside surface of the brick, t2 :

[-_l : ]
Q = U.A (thf- t2)

or, 525.26 = A(thf - t2 )

Example 2.27. Afurnace wall is made of composite wall of total thickness 550 mm. The inside
layer is made of refractory material (K = 2.3 W/mK) and outside layer is made of an insulating
material (K = 0.2 W/mK). The mean temperature of the glass inside the furnace is 900 ° C and inter
face temperature is 520 ° C. The heat transfer coefficient between the gases and inner surface can be
taken as 230 W/m2 ° C and between the outside surface and atmosphere as 46 W/m20 C. Taking air
temperature = 30 ° C, calculate :
(i) Required thickness of each layer,
(ii) The rate of heat loss per m2 area, and
(iii) The temperatures of surface exposed to gases and of surface exposed to atmosphere.
