PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION: THE BASICS
At some point in its growth, every company has had the need to transport its
merchandise. By choosing the right mode of transport, we will find a balance
between time and budget constraints. Balance poorly and you could face a
group of very disappointed customers.

Choosing your mode of transport: what to consider

• When choosing the means of transport for the products, the budget
should be the most important factor in making the decision.
• The speed of transport is also very important, since if you have
perishable products, shipping them by sea is a very bad idea;
Ensuring that the transport that has been chosen is reliable also for
the customer is important; so as not to disappoint buyers.
Road
• Road transport is quite cheap, flexible. But it is not very friendly to the
environment, and can be subject to long delays if you work with a tight
schedule.
• If freight is transported by road, the weight, height and length
restrictions of the trucks must be taken into account.
Rail
• Rail transport is fast, respectful of the environment, it is rare that there
is congestion or delay; But you have to take into account the cost of
road transport at the end of the trip.
Air
• Air transport, without a doubt, is the fastest way to transport
merchandise over long distances; but it is very expensive and not
very ecological, in air transport the cargo is charged by kilograms.
handling costs, fuel, and customs fees must also be taken into
account.
Sea
Unlike air transport, maritime is very economical, but nevertheless it is very
slow and quite inflexible.
• maritime cargo ships are made up of the following: container carriers,
loose cargo transport, bulk carriers and tanker ships.
