LATEST TRENDS ON EMERGENCY AND DISASTER

Every country is increasingly vulnerable to a variety of disaster challenges,

including natural, man-made, and technology. As risks become more serious, the way
public and private entities collaborate must evolve. To protect residents from disaster
and emergency risks, all entities involved in emergency management must take a
proactive and comprehensive approach. Fors Marsh Group (FMG), a private
corporation based in Virginia, has been thinking about this and has identified three
emerging trends that will help any country be better prepared for whatever new threats
arise.

One emerging trend the group has formulated is targeted communications with
behaviour change science. This is an intersection of data science and the people that
are focused on understanding why and how individuals make the risk-decisions they do.
In this trend, understanding the why can create communication strategies to help people
make positive choices. It provides scientific evidence and expertise to develop effective
communication solutions designed to combat important health and risk concerns, often
in extremely sensitive situations. The best trend for this is tailored messaging for
vulnerable populations such as low-income families, senior citizens, and people living in
rural communities.

Another emerging trend is the availability of Earth Observation data. It is evident

that the focus of disaster management has shifted from immediate response in the
1970s to risk reduction in the years since 2000, with a focus on readiness, response,
and mitigation through simulation. With new advancements like night satellite imagery
monitor, Earth Observation, particularly the use of commercial drones and satellites, is
useful for targeted monitoring of crisis in hostile and inaccessible areas, as the
information collected provides useful insight for pre and post crisis periods, including
human movements. The main focus should be on reducing information redundancy and
developing models which supports building resilience for risk and disaster
monitoring which will eventually limit the occurrence of crises.

Lastly, engaging the whole community in disaster preparedness is one of the

trends on emergency and disaster. We know that communities are stronger and more
resilient to new threats of all kinds when everyone participates in putting the plan into
action.

We are aware that the threats to any country are always evolving. These trends
are examples to ensure that more individuals participate in emergency planning in their
communities and that people receive information that motivates this generation and the
next to be prepared for whatever disasters may occur in the future.
