Soil Bearing Capacity Calculation
Soil Bearing Capacity Calculation
Compute the allowable bearing pressure using Terzaghi equation for the footing and soil parameters shown in
Figure 1.
1.0 Find the bearing capacity. Note that this value is usually the result of geotechnical investigation.
Since:
Ø = 50 deg
Therefore from Table 4-2: From Table 4-1
Nc = 347.5 sc = 1.3
Nq = 415.1 sγ = 0.8
Nγ = 1153.2
q = 20.76 =D

2.0 Determine the ultimate vertical load that the foundation can cary by using Meyerhof's values.
Eq. 2.83
Eq. 2.66
Eq. 2.67
Eq. 2.72
3.0 From Table 2.3 Meyerhof's bearing capacity factor:
Since:
f = 25 deg
Nc = 20.72
Nq = 10.66
Ng = 6.77
3.1 Refer from Table 2.5 Summary of shape and depth factors.
lcs = 1.246
lqs = 1.123
lgs = 1.123
lcd = 1.314
lqd = 1.157
lgd = 1.157
Therefore: from Eq. 2.83
q = 10.8 kPa
qu = 1825.42 kN/m²
SF = 3 Factor of
Safety
qa = 608.47 kN/m²

Note that the allowable pressure qa is very large, and the actual soil pressure qact
is also large. Some geotechnical consultants routenly limit the maximum allowable
soil pressure to around 500 kPa in recommendations to clients for design wheter
settlement is a factor or not. Small footings with large column loads are visually
not very confidence-inspiring during construction, and with such a large load
involved this in cetainly not the location to be excessively conservative.
