Review of Statics and Internal Reactions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. The pin at A can support a maximum force of 3.2 kN. Determine the corresponding maximum
load L which can be supported by the bracket.

2. Compute the force supported by the pin at A for the plier under a grip of 100 N.

3. Determine the tension in the nail and the reaction at A. Assume contacting surface at A to be
sufficiently rough to prevent slippage.

4. The crane is designed for a maximum capacity of 10 KN and its uniform I-beam has a mass of
200 Kg. Plot the magnitude of the force “R” at pin A in the range 0.2 m < x < 3.8m. Determine
the minimum value of R and the corresponding value of x. Suggest the least value of R for which
pin A can be safely designed.

5. The upper jaw D of the toggle press slides with negligible frictional resistance along the fixed
vertical column. Calculate the compressive force R exerted on the cylinder E and the force
supported by the pin at A if a force F= 200 N is applied to the handle at an angle  = 75o.

6. The pipe has a mass of 12 kg/m. If it is fixed to the wall at A, determine the resultant internal
loadings acting on the cross section at B. Neglect the weight of the wrench CD.

7. The backhoe is controlled by the three hydraulic cylinders, in the particular position shown, and
the hoe can apply a horizontal force P=10 kN. Neglect the masses of the members and compute
the magnitude of the forces supported by the pins at A and E.

8. Gear C drives the V-belt pulley D at a constant speed. Determine the gear tooth force P and the
reactions at bearings A and B.

9. For each of the devices shown, determine the internal reactions at a-a, b-b and c-c;. Resolve each
reaction into normal components to the indicated section. Identify each component as: tension,
compression bending, shear or twisting.
