Abstract
This body of work showcases the design journey that I underwent through the four month period of my internship at
the Indian Music Experience Museum, Bengaluru. It captures the essence of my role on IME's "Birdsong" a virtual
exhibition aimed at creating awareness about birds, their music and their plight in today's ecological landscape.
This document is also explanatory in terms of my working methods adopted, contribution made and the learnings.
I think the quality of one’s study space is majorly reflected in how one thinks and works. Apart from the course
content, what really matters is an experimental learning environment which includes faculty and peers from various
backgrounds, especially in a field like design. The more varied and diverse the perspectives, the better the learning.
This is precisely why I chose to work on the most important project of my college years at IME. By understanding a
pattern of psycho-social conditioning in a community-born from one’s upbringing, exposure, context and own personal
enquiries-any public space can be transformed into a path far more immersive in real-time. Because of the pandemic,
societal systems have undergone change. This has opened up a huge opportunity for design intervention in the virtual
space. I’d like to be on the forefront of that change.

IME's "Birdsong" talks of birds
and their godly talent.
Music has the ability to cause change. It immensely contributes to and enhances our understanding
of the natural world. With a vision to raise awareness about our planet, IME is presenting a unique
4-month exhibition called the 'Birdsong' which will showcase the importance of birds in our natural
systems, their role in our cultural identity, and the commonality of music in birds and humans. Birds
are the martyrs of our own earthbound existence. Over time due to urbanization, apex predator
privilege, ignorance, birds have lost their importance in today’s landscape. However, they selflessly
struggle to keep the ecosystem alive and they do so in the most melodious way possible. Birds
need us too. Their songs need an audience. we interact with them on an intangible level through
our hearts vis beauty and music. Why must we not try to save this bond? Is there a compassionate
solution to our peril?

1.THE VISUAL STORY

Background: content development, research

The first sub task focused on content proposals, we individually shared ideas of what we think the exhibition
should say. The brief is to propose a structure for the offline and online exhibition. To suggest visualisations if
valid. The proposal must be created keeping in mind that the objective is to inspire and instil an appreciation
for nature and the environment in people's lives, focusing on the importance of birds for our environmental
sustainability. The proposal must pave the way from Inspiration Motivation Action. All the ideas were to be
collated on notion and presented to the mentors. By doing this, the team was also asked to get accustomed
to the back end research needed to work on a virtual exhibition and get familiar with the heroes of the project
namely, Birds and Music. Detailed research was not required at this stage, a content structure had already
been made, this was to explore the possibilities of diversified minds on the application of this concept.

PROJECTS

THE OVER ARCHING NARRATIVE

The brief is to focus on visuals. How we think the exhibition should look like. We first had to propose certain
visual narratives that we pick up from reading the content structure that was provided by the content team.
This narrative is crucial to bind the whole exhibition together visually. Once a narrative was identified, we
move on to defining the presentation of that story, whether it is heavily illustrative, organic, vectors, collage,
etc. I used Miro to put my ideas together as images and notes and the Miro board was presented for
discussion.

FINALISED NARRATIVE

Utopia

Our utopia is one where there are no walls, only open doors. These doors connect every wake of life
interdependently and bridge the ironic gap between man and nature. Will the emergence of a utopian world
where there is room for everyone to sustain harmoniously and CO-EXIST be mankind's salvation. An idea as
insane as time travel but more practical than the latter. This narrative mainly works to add a layer of meaning
to the illustrations that will stand with the exhibition content. The visitor community will be motivated to think
radically and be aware of the need for such radical thinking at this spontaneous present.
The Utopian narrative will subtly unveil itself in stages as one progresses further and further into the
exhibition. The actual visuals will be created with this concept in mind while still giving focus to the content.

2. IDENTITY DESIGN
Background: logo design, graphic design

Objective To create a visual identity for IME's Birdsong that would fittingly carry the weight of IME's moral
resolve towards this exhibition.

Deliverables A completed logo and a identity guidelines document.

Instructed cues Off the bat, the only conditioning I was to follow, was to keep the strokes raw, hand-crafted.

My Role I was assigned the task of creating the logo. I also created the identity guidelines document.
I attempted to combine the exhibit's hero entities-- humans, birds, music--to create the identity.

THE IME
10
KEY WORD
CONCEPT

The identity is a visualisation of our fluid utopia that will be mankind's only saving grace. The stakeholders of
this concept are humans, birds, music and nature. So each of these entities will be represented through
appropriate visuals and these visuals will be placed harmoniously to make up the whole pictorial mark.
Visual brainstorming with strokes, figure ground, to explore the concept of co-existence through lines that
flow from one entity into another. A bird can be represented as a feather or a wing, similarly nature as a leaf,
music as notes or waves, humans as a hand or a fingerprint. These elements of birds, humans and music will
be mellifluously placed to hint at the over-arching idea of COEXISTENCE.

THE IME

63
THE PROCESS
Various ways to draw the form of the bird, the leaves, the hand, the song 65
ART STYLE

In order to mimic the fluid nature of musical notes and to capture the organic form of the natural world, an
unpolished, hand drawn stroke was used to create all the elements of the logo. The pictorial mark consists
of a stylized and simplified bird, a human hand with an open gesture, a stylized leaf and concentric, rhythmic
lines to represent music. These entities will be loosely suspended drawing a parallel to how life started in
the primordial soup ---- the birth of a new world.

THE IME
FINDING BALANCE

67
FONT - AVERIA LIBRE

A fluid, hand drawn style pictorial mark is paired with a similarly stylized, non-rigid typeface called Averia
Libre (Regular). Averia Libre (bold) can also be used for creative purposes. Both the title and the tagline
are to be typed in Averia Libre (Regular). The title and the tagline were provided by the content team.

THE IME
PLACING TEXT

71
ORGANIC PROCESS

The whole process of logo development was very organic. Every step was just a draft, a rough thought,
nothing was final. Even when adding colour, the logo form wasn't final, the text placement wasn't final.
The logo kept evolving according to the progress and the feedback until one final option emerged.

THE IME
FINALIZED LOGO

73
FINAL COLOUR OPTION

Birds are one of the most colourful species to ever trod the scapes of the Earth. The colour palette had to
dutifully capture this characteristic of birds and at the same time not overwhelm the eye. A palette of
orange, yellow, blue, green and pink that shared visual harmony works beautifully towards this resolve and
also invokes a sense of play and cheer.

3. ART FOR GAME - BIRD HOUSE
Background: illustration

Objective To redesign Early Bird's "Memory Game" for the virtual Birdsong exhibition. This game is an interactive
element of the website.

Deliverables A completely coded and tested digital card game.

Instructed cues The content and rules of the game are kept the same as the physical card game.

My Role I was assigned the task of creating the art for the cards. By doing so I also will be defining the art
language for the overall virtual exhibition. I had to illustrate the habitats on the card face, the backgrounds for
the game at different stages of use.

Early Bird is an initiative by the Education and Public Engagement Programme of NCF. It develops innovative,
multilingual educational materials, both print and digital, that can be used to engage learners in the field explore
the rich birdlife of India by employing a range of techniques like games, creative activities and science-based
multi-media. This project focuses on their flashcard memory game. This is a game of chance much like "Mahjong
tiles" where one must match birds' habitats to win. This game must be redesigned for both mobile and desktop
and it can be played with or without a timer. The game will layout cards in a four by four gird giving up a total of 8
pairs to match.

THE IME
THE PROCESS
Rethinking format I played the physical card game with my colleagues and I noticed some parts that will not work in
the virtual space and might need re-thinking. The cards have two faces, one face has the image of a bird and the
other face has details about the bird's habitat and other facts. On the table the cards are placed with the photograph
face up and the habitat covered. The player chooses two cards and flips them over to see if their habitats match.
Since the game revolves around matching the habitats of birds, the background in the photographs of the birds gave
it away. Unfortunately these images can't be tampered with. Secondly, the key element that needs to matched is
placed in the corner in a very small size and is not prominent at all. In the virtual space, this icon will not be visible at
all and player may not be interested in reading a load of facts. I proposed that the virtual card unit must have the one
face with the image of the bird and other face with a full blown illustration/collage/image of the habitat so that the
cards become easily understandable. The fact can appear on the game screen as a reward after one wins a match
so as not lose sight of the educational purpose of this game.

10
ART STYLE INSPIRATION

An Indian touch

Defining the art style for the game becomes crucial as this art will have to be followed to draw elements in the
parent website as well. I pushed for an Indian art inspired illustration style, particularly Gond art. I have always
found Gond flora and fauna to be very expressive and have a lot of humane characteristics. If we were to sell
the idea of co-existence, we will have to imagine the art to be an amalgamation of both worlds - human and bird.
I studied gond art and adopted certain characters for my illustrations such as the way the eye is drawn, the
imperfect forms, the characteristic leg / branch seen in Gond life forms, the textures for backgrounds and the
vivid colour scheme. These forms combined with a more malleable colouring style and collage is the
art language that will be used to do all the illustrations related to this project.

THE IME
87
THEME FOR ART
89
Final visual style Photo cut outs, hand drawn accents, gond- inspired texture swatches. All the elements will
for the most part will be something that lives/originates/used/seen/practiced in India by the Indian people.
This gives use some context for the art and authenticity. This also suits the museums resolve to propagate
Indian art forms and artists.

THE IME
91
The game can be played as two modes - normal and gaming. In the normal mode, you can play at your leisure,
where as in the gaming mode you will be on the clock to finish your matches in the shortest time possible.
I used the IME kuruvi to represent these two modes in the choose mode screen. In the normal mode, the birds
and the supporting elements are calmly scattered about the space which is also in a neutral colour. In the
gaming mode, the birds flying with clocks denote a sense of urgency. The supporting elements have also
been arranged in dynamic lines, the space is a bright orange.

THE IME
I had to illustrate the background for the mode choosing screen for both mobile (720px by 1280px) and
desktop (1920px by 1080 px) versions. In the images you can see how the backdrop has been used in the
game layout by the team's UI UX designer. The interface designer used the fonts Poppins and Averia libre.

THE IME
95
ILLUSTRATING HABITATS

I illustrated four habitats - Forests, Wetlands, Woodlands, Grasslands. These illustrations will be used full
blown on the downward facing side of the card along with the name of the respective bird it is home to. Since
these need to be a close match to the look and feel of real world habitats, I have not been too playful with
colours as one sees in Gond, for educational purposes. The background of the game space while the cards
are being matched is a texture that is meant to represent the sky, it is inspired from Gond. It is very subtle so
as to not distract from the cards.

THE IME

The landing screens are visualised and executed as a collage made with all the elements used in different
screens and cards of the game. As forests are to birds, cities are to humans. Since the theme for my art is to
juxtapose the human and bird world, I have written the name of the game in one for the road sign boards,
which are used in the real world to denote city or state names.

Background: illustration

Objective To create a fully coded virtual exhibition for IME's Birdsong. The virtual exhibition is not associated

already defined.

LANDING SCREEN NARRATIVE

As soon as you enter birdsong, we intend to give you a reason for your presence here and why this exhibition
is important. So we begin with a narrative where you first are forced to imagine a world without birds, which
slowly transitions into a greener utopia. For the first screen I imagined. a lifeless world, irreversibly urbanized,
in peril. The houses in this human world intentionally are made to resemble bird houses. The transition is
visualised as a wall breaking slowly to reveal the dream world. I imagined utopia to be blooming green, with
Thamarai flowers which symbolise rebirth. Birds are very fond of the Champaka tree and its flowers and
hence they are placed there as well. There humans living in bird nests, and birds living in human buildings.
They are subjects cut out from old Indian paintings and collaged to form the human element of our utopia.
The bird nests have been humanized with posters stuck on them, and the pattai. And finally the characteristic
gond eye representing the "all seeing eye".

CONCLUSION & LEARNINGS

The entire Experience of the internship at IME, is one of connecting the dots and my elation is akin to a child
who has resolved a jigsaw puzzle. Being a hands on person, my skepticism on joining the IME, with an
assignment to create a virtual exhibition was quite pronounced. The credit to negating this goes entirely to
the Design team at IME, peers and mentors. Thanks to them the travel has been a cherishable one.

My major take away from this episode was the versatility of the virtual medium in creating an interface that
accommodates technocrats and artists alike and its immense potential to enable collaborations. I for one did
not feel debilitated in any way and continued contributing with my strengths. At a personal level persuasion
and persistence were two other virtues that this journey has inculcated in me, going through a rigorous
process of conception, validating, re- thinking, and iterating. The maturity to take appreciation and criticism
with a level head and push oneself to work beyond one's comfort zone are valuable life lessons.

As a professional this occurrence has enhanced my ability to communicate across ages and stakeholders
from diverse backgrounds ranging from Designers, Developers colleagues, teammates each with an intent
and visualisation of their own and finally the common man for whom its an " Experience ".

The assimilation of intents and the final synthesis and execution to create this experience devoid of the
tactile was quiet engrossing. This called for an exercising in evoking the other senses to simulate the
physical manifest that an exhibition like the nature of Bird song demands.

The entire travel, I must conclude did bring to light a better understanding of Design as a profession.
It negated the idea of a singular minded approach and taught me the value of a team that like a precise
assembly line takes you through the entire process from conception to execution. There is no gender play or
experienced and amateur as long as there is value in an idea.

This incident of being involved in" Bird song " would serve as a reference that I would draw upon moving
further on in my career.
