Basic Definitions

Mathematical Model is a mathematical representation of the

physical model through use of appropriate physical laws.

Transfer Function of a system is defined as the ratio of

Laplace Transform of output to the Laplace Transform of
input with zero initial conditions.
Transfer function can be mathematically represented as
Mechanical Translational System

• The Model of a mechanical translational system can be obtained by

3 basic elements
• Mass : weight of the mechanical system is represented by mass
and it is assumed to be concentrated at the center of the body
• Spring: Elastic deformation of the body can be represented by a
spring
• Dashpot: The friction existing in the mechanical system is
represented by dashpot. Dash pot is ideally a piston moving inside a
cylinder with viscous fluid.
• The force acting on a mechanical body are governed by Newton’s
second law of motion. i.e the sum of forces acting on a body is zero.
