UNIT N° 2
TOPIC Chemistry of Life
OBJECTIVES  To know about the protein building blocks.
 To identify the building blocks.
 To learn about the 4 macromolecules.

1. Topic Development:

What are protein building blocks?

The building blocks of proteins are amino acids which are small organic molecules that consist of an alpha
(central) carbon atom linked to an amino group a carboxyl group a hydrogen atom and a variable component
called a side chain (see below).

Are Carbohydrates building blocks?

The simplest carbohydrates are called monosaccharides or simple sugars. They are the building blocks
(monomers) for the synthesis of polymers or complex carbohydrates as will be discussed further in this
section. Monosaccharides are classified based on the number of carbons in the molecule.

What is block building?

A unit of construction or composition especially something essential on which a larger entity is based.

What are the building blocks of life why are they so called Class 8?
Cells are the building blocks of life. They are called so because large number of cells assemble to make
the body of a multicellular organism.

What are building blocks of life answer?

All life is composed mainly of the four macromolecule building blocks: carbohydrates lipids proteins and
nucleic acids. The interactions of different polymers of these basic molecule types make up the majority of
life’s structure and function.

What are the 4 macromolecules and their building blocks?

Types of biological macromolecules:
Biological macromolecule Building blocks
Carbohydrates Monosaccharides (simple sugars)
Lipids Fatty acids and glycerol
Proteins Amino acids
Nucleic acids Nucleotides
What is the building block of plant and animal bodies?
Cells are the basic building blocks of all animals and plants. Inside cells are various structures that are
specialised to carry out a particular function.

What are the building blocks of the human body?

Cells the basic building blocks of the human body make up tissues which form specialized structures called
organs. Organ systems are groups of organs and tissues that all function together towards a single purpose.

What is the basic building blocks of proteins draw its basic structure?
The basic building block of a protein is called an amino acid. There are 20 amino acids in the proteins you
eat and in the proteins within your body and they link together to form large protein molecules.

What is the basic building block of a carbohydrate?

Monosaccharides are single sugar molecules that are the building blocks for all other sugars and
carbohydrates. Glucose fructose and galactose are examples of these.
What are the three building blocks of proteins?

What Are The Building Blocks of Proteins?

Amino Group.
Carboxyl Group.
R Group (Or Side Chain)

What are building blocks of polysaccharides?

The building blocks of polysaccharides are monosaccharides.

What are the basic building blocks of lipids?

The component building blocks of the lipids found in storage fats in lipoproteins (combinations of lipid and
protein) and in the membranes of cells and organelles are glycerol the fatty acids and a number of other
compounds (e.g. serine inositol).

New words:
 Monosaccharides: any of the class of sugars (e.g., glucose) that cannot be hydrolyzed to give a
simpler sugar.
 Lipid: any of a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids or their derivatives and are insoluble
in water but soluble in organic solvents. They include many natural oils, waxes, and steroids.
 Enzimes: proteins that help speed up metabolism, or the chemical reactions in our bodies.
 Polysaccharide: a carbohydrate (e.g. starch, cellulose, or glycogen) whose molecules consist of a
number of sugar molecules bonded together.
 Carboxyl: of or denoting the acid radical —COOH, present in most organic acids.
