PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Participants benefit from New York City as the hub to study leadership and management,
strategy and innovation, and global business acumen from Ivy League faculty and industry
practitioners.
Along with one in-person module in New York City, participants take part in live interactive
sessions with Columbia faculty, immerse themselves in online modules, and continue to work
on group projects and apply the learnings to their workplace.
Career management sessions are integrated into the program to help participants think about
planning their careers strategically. For some, this could mean a career transition. For others,
it could mean exploring larger roles with their existing employers.
Participants explore a wide variety of cutting-edge management practices and interact with
Ivy League faculty, industry practitioners, and experienced peers in the program. By using the
principle of action learning, participants emerge from the Executive Program in Management
as stronger and more focused leaders, better equipped to take the next step in their
leadership journey.

A key aspect of the Executive Program in Management’s learning journey is the group project.
Participants will be assigned to small groups to solve a business problem by applying
concepts and tools learned in the online, live online, and on-campus sessions.
The project can be a real-world problem that one person in the group is facing in their
organization, or it can also be a new business idea that a group member is developing.
This project will enable program participants to effectively tackle real-world business
problems by applying the tools, frameworks, and lessons learned in the program.

Leaders need to stay a step ahead of their competitors to succeed. This requires looking for
ideas in unexpected places and analyzing them in novel ways. The Executive Program in
Management has several experiential class sessions to help participants create more
organizational and professional value. Many of these sessions take advantage of our unique
location in New York City to study innovation, improvisation, and the robustness of
organizations. At Columbia Business School, we bring the most relevant cutting-edge research
so participants can channel promising ideas in the right direction.
Here are some examples:
Leadership Jazz
Lessons for leadership can come from a variety of sources, including the creative and performing
arts. In this showcase session, we work with a live jazz ensemble and introduce participants to the
world of jazz musicians. Using the experience as an organizing metaphor, participants consider
the origins of jazz—an art form born out of conflict and crisis—and how lessons for leadership
from a jazz ensemble can help teams and organizations work better together.
Organizing to Innovate
While it’s important for an organization to execute a strategy, there also must be space to
invent. In the Executive Program in Management classroom, we meet with thought leaders
such as Rita McGrath and Bill Duggan to discuss strategic innovation. We also examine
innovation up close, allowing participants to practice leadership and interaction patterns that
encourage new ideas.
