Apartheid was a system of acts put in place by the white minority government

in South Africa. Forced discrimination and isolation of the black and coloured
majority, denying them their basic social and legal rights.

The executive definition of Apartheid is a classification of separation or
discrimination on grounds of race. in simple words Apartheid means apartness.
Many countries have suffered from apartheid and still do. South Africa is one of
apartheids victims. The fair and white british came to South Africa planning to
take control of the country. A bureaucrat policy of racial separation formerly
practiced in the republic of South Africa, involving political, legal, and
economic discrimination against non whites. in general, it is any policy
that segregates persons by using race or colour. In simple words Apartheid
was based on segregating policies and laws. These laws classified people into
three races white, Bantu, or black Africans and coloured, or people of
varied tumble. The laws resolute where members of each group could live, what
works s they could hold, and what type of education they could receive.
The South African system of apartheid comes under heavy attack in Master Harold. and the
Boys despite the fact that apartheid is not directly addressed in the play. Instead, it is the
society that the system has created that is criticized. It is not only that racial discrimination is
legislated in South Africa.

The relationship between Hally and his father is very complicated because he and
his father don't get along throughout the play. This causes Sam to come into the
picture as a father-figure. There is a great relationship between Hally and Sam at the
beginning of the play. Later the bond change when Hally's mother calls and he learn
that his father is coming home. "It sounded as if they were telling her to come
and fetch him." Hally ends his frustration on both Sam and Willie causing conflict.
His feelings have conflicted the love for his father.

Violence in MHATB is another conflict that occurs between Hally and Sam. When
Hally spits in Sam's face, the dark side of Sam comes out causing him almost want
to hit Hally. But Sam stops himself from hitting him and condemns his (Hally)
parents. "I mean, how do I wash off yours and your father's filth? I’ve also
failed. A long time ago I promised myself I would do something, but you've just
shown me...Master Harold...that I've failed." Hally being refers to "Master
Harold" demonstrate the grasp of Sam that Hally will always see him as his Inferiors
just as the Apartheid demanded.
From the start of the play to the end of the play you can see two opposite race
character’s opinion change of the others due to society and its demand of the
relation from white to blacks. Sam is Hally's only father figure but towards the end of
the play their relationship transforms into a master and servant relationship due to
the confusing state of his fatherless figure when he finds out his white father is
coming back from the hospital, Hally is confused, angered and in an emotional state
when he goes to Sam and Willie, he insults them and does what every other white
male would do in the society rather than being this bright positive thinking young
man, this is due to society's influence on "Master Harold".

"He's a white man and

that's good enough for you."

This reveals the crisis of Apartheid, where blacks were separate from whites and
oppressed. From the beginning of the play, one can see that Hally is fond of Sam
and Willie compares to his own parents. One can also see when Hally is in a good
mood, he seems to have a friendly chat with Sam about "social reformers”. But at
some point, he loses his temper and compare Sam with "White man"

The significance of this is to demonstrate the real life of Hally which comes from
Fugard's own biography. During the crisis of Apartheid where power was used
against the "Black" people.

The conflict is to show the power of a “white man” that is Sam showing respect and
obeying orders from him (Hally) but it difficult for him to command Sam’s respect
instead he tends to humiliate Sam. “Just get on with your bloody work and shut
up.” This conflict occurs when Hally tries to show his power. But Sam refuses to call
Hally “master”. One significant of this conflict is that Fugard wants to show how
black were treated during the Apartheid. Respect was demand from the black by the
whites.
