Pedagogy Planning

In this activity, my students are going to use the PicFont website to each create their own advertisement of a made-up
product/service, explain the purpose and effectiveness of it in an assignment sheet, and show their advertisements to
the class.
Activity
1. (WK1 DAY 1) The teacher will start by introducing the topic and
information to the students via PowerPoint lesson(s) consisting of
learning about various types of rhetorical methods and strategies (like
pathos, logos and ethos) and how they are utilized in advertisements;
they will also review examples of different types of visual ads.

2. Then, the teacher will introduce the assignment to students by going

over the assignment sheet (a Google Doc). They will also go over how
to use the PicFont website, ask the students to start considering what
kind of ad they want to create, their message, etc. and then ask them
to post these ideas for homework via online private discussion board.
The students will then be urged to start creating the ad once posting
their initial ideas and bring a rough draft of the ad to the next class.

3. Before the next class day when the initial idea is due, the teacher will
check to make sure an initial ad idea has been posted to the private
discussion board and also offer initial thoughts on the idea and
whether the students are on the right track.

4. (WK1 DAY 2) The teacher will continue to review rhetorical strategies

and direct students to get together in groups to discuss their ideas,
asking them to review each other’s ideas/work and offer comments on
specific areas that need improvement and that are successful.

5. After the review, the teacher will use class time to go over specific
students’ questions, help the students in using PicFont, and in helping
them create their ads. The students will be expected to have the
assignment at least ½-finished by the end of the week and bring rough
drafts.

6. (WK1 DAY 3) The teacher will offer additional help with the assignment
throughout the week via office hours, study hall, and available class
time. The students can also email a full rough draft to the teacher to
receive feedback by the end of the weekend.

7. (WK2 DAY 1) The students must submit the advertisement and share
the assignment sheet Google Doc with the teacher by the start of this

class period. The teacher will use class time to display the students’
advertisements and review the elements of them.
Web 2.0 The students will be using the website PicFont to be creating their
Technology advertisements for this assignment. The website is very versatile in offering
resources, from manipulating images and inserting texts of various fonts to
adjusting the characteristics of other elements. Students will be expected to
use copyright-free (Creative Commons) imagery in their assignments, but free
images are also provided in PicFont.

Mobile App 1. PicFont does not have a mobile app option, but it does have a
Option smartphone-friendly interface that can be utilized on a phone as well as
a computer. *Mobile editing limits the size that images can be during
uploading, but other apps such as the Image Size app can fix this.
2. As for the assignment sheet, Google Docs offers both a seamless
website interface but also actual smartphone apps. If the students have
to use their mobile phones and would prefer using an actual app, they
can turn to apps such as Photoshop Mix, a free service that works just
as well in photo/text manipulation and editing. Altogether, all of the
Web applications used: Creative Commons, PicFont, Google Docs
and/or Photoshop Mix are completely free and simple to use.
