With the capability of doubling bentonite yield, GELEX* bentonite extender is able to maintain
a given viscosity with half the amount of conventional clay solids while causing drilled solids—
especially fine, silty solids—to form agglomerates and settle out. These features make GELEX
extender an excellent additive for low-solids drilling fluids and both weighted and unweighted
nondispersed drilling fluid systems.

Recommendations
For initial treatment, add 0.05-lbm/bbl GELEX extender. For subsequent treatment, add 2-lbm
[0.91-kg] GELEX extender per 5–8 sacks of bentonite. Soda ash is recommended to control calcium
levels in the system below 0.11 lbm/bbl [300 mg/L] per 100-lbm sack of bentonite.
Toxicity and handling
Bioassay information is available upon request. Handle as an industrial chemical, wear protective
equipment, and observe the precautions as described on the material safety datasheet (MSDS).
Severe overexposure may cause mild irritation to the eyes and upper respiratory system. A dust
respirator and goggles are recommended when mixing in enclosed areas.

Packaging and storage

A box of GELEX bentonite extender contains 25 2-lbm [0.91-kg] vinyl bags. Store in a dry location
away from sources of heat or ignition, and minimize dust.
