 Goa Liberation Day 2021
• On 19 December, 1961, India conquered Goa from the Portuguese and Goa
became a part of India
• Goa was a Portuguese colony for 451 years.
• The government of India under Jawaharlal Nehru in 1961 adopted a plan
called Operation Vijay to free the Portuguese colonies in India. General JN
Chaudhari was in charge of carrying out this plan. By 11 December, 1961,
Indian forces were placed at Belgaum, Vapi and Una for attacks on Goa,
Daman and Diu, respectively.
• All the three sections of the Indian armed forces participated in
Operation Vijay. The Indian attack overpowered the Portuguese
3,000 member army with a force of almost 30,000.

• After numerous operations all over Goa, on 19 December, the

Indian forces, which had successfully reached Betim the previous
day, arrived at Panjim and hoisted the Indian flag. The Indian

• The day recognises and celebrates his works. On this day,
the genius mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in
1887 to a Tamil Brahmin Iyengar family at Erode, Tamil
Nadu.
• In 2012, the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan
Singh, paid tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan at a function
organised on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great
mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan in Chennai.
• Thus, on 22 December 2012, National Mathematics Day was
celebrated across the country for the first time.
• The main objective behind the celebration is to raise
awareness among people about the importance of
mathematics for the development of humanity.
• The 2015 movie 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' was released

• The Good Governance week theme is -“Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur”
and it aims to take good governance to the rural areas.
• This was informed by the Department of Administrative
Reforms and Public Grievance (DARPG).
• Good Governance Week Portal will also be launched during the
occasion and all district collectors of states and union territories
will be given access to the online portal to upload and share
the progress and achievements.
• The Good Governance week will conclude with the Good
Governance Day celebration at Vigyan Bhawan on December
25. Over 700 district collectors are expected to take part in the
campaign and visit Tehsil or Panchayat Samiti Headquarters for

• National Farmers' Day is observed in India in remembrance of Chaudhary Charan Singh, who
was committed to the wellbeing of the farmers.
• National Farmers' Day is observed on December 23, the birth anniversary of Chaudhary
Charan Singh, the fifth prime minister of India.
• India’s is an agrarian economy as almost 55% of its population depends on
agriculture and farming activities to earn their livelihood. Therefore, National
Farmers Day is observed to educate the citizens of the country about the lives
and contributions of Indian farmers towards their individual lives and towards
the country at large.
• Chaudhary Charan Singh came from a humble household in Uttar Pradesh.
Motivated by Mahatma Gandhi, Charan Singh stepped into politics. He was
elected to the Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces in 1937.
• He was the prime minister between July 1979 and January 1980.
• In 1939, he introduced the Debt Redemption Bill to give relief to the farmers
from moneylenders.
• In the 1950s, he drafted and ensured the passage of revolutionary land reform
laws.
• As the agriculture minister, in 1952, Charan Singh worked for abolishing the
zamindari system.
• In 1967, he became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
• On December 23, 1978, he founded the Kisan Trust, a non-profit making body,
aiming to educate the rural masses of India against injustice.
• The government, in 2001, decided to mark Charan Singh's birth anniversary as
Kisan Diwas.
• For his association with the farming community, his memorial in New Delhi
was named the Kisan Ghat.
