NOTICE
Malfunctions through incorrect or damaged isolation ring.
– Do not turn isolation ring on sender head.
– Replace incorrect or damaged isolation ring.
– Check isolation ring -1- on sender -3- for damage and renew
if necessary.
– Push electrical connector -2- on sender -3- and engage.
– Install sender -3- into bracket.
– When inserting the sender in the sender retainer, make sure
that the isolation ring is seated correctly on the sender head.
• Both locking lugs of sender retainer must audibly engage
when installing the sender.

Inner senders
– Remove front bumper cover ⇒ General body repairs, exterior;
Rep. gr. 63 ; Front bumper; Removing and installing bumper
cover .
– Release and separate electrical connector -2-.
• Pull electrical connector -2- in a straight line off parking aid
sender -1-.
– Press both locking lugs in direction of -arrow-.
– At the same time, press sender -1- all the way from outside
towards inside.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

Malfunctions through incorrect or damaged isolation ring.
– Do not turn isolation ring on sender head.
– Replace incorrect or damaged isolation ring.
– Check isolation ring -1- on sender -2- for damage and renew
if necessary.
– Install sender -2- into bracket first.
– When inserting the sender in the sender retainer, make sure
that the isolation ring is seated correctly on the sender head.
• Both locking lugs of sender retainer must audibly engage
when installing the sender.
– Then, push electrical connector -3- in a straight line onto send‐
er -2- and engage.
NOTICE
Malfunctions through incorrect or damaged isolation ring.
– Do not turn isolation ring on sender head.
– Replace incorrect or damaged isolation ring.
– Check isolation ring -1- on sender -3- for damage and renew
if necessary.
– Push electrical connector -2- on sender -3- and engage.
– Install sender -3- into bracket.
– When inserting the sender in the sender retainer, make sure
that the isolation ring is seated correctly on the sender head.
• Both locking lugs of sender retainer must audibly engage
when installing the sender.
NOTICE

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Insert new clips -1- and -2- until they engage in retaining plate
-3-.
• The closed clip -1- must seat on the retaining plate -3- at bot‐
tom right.

– Insert stud.
• Stud must be correctly aligned with clip.
– Screw stud into adaptive cruise control unit as far as dimen‐
sion -a-.
– Use digital calliper -VAS 6335- to measure dimension -a- on
all studs and adjust if necessary.
• Dimension -a- = 17.6 mm ± 0.5 mm
The control unit for night vision system - J853- is located under
the front left seat.
Note
Removing
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers.
– Keep the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the ignition
from being switched on unintentionally.
– Remove left front seat ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep.
gr. 72 ; Front seats; Removing and installing front seat .
– Remove foot mat.
– Remove left sill panel moulding ⇒ General body repairs, in‐
terior; Rep. gr. 70 ; Trims, interior; Assembly overview - sill
panel moulding .
– Fold floor covering in front left towards the middle of the vehi‐
cle.
– Unscrew bolts -arrows-.
– Release and disconnect electrical connectors -3-.
– Unhook control unit for night vision system - J853- -1- with
bracket -2- in -direction of arrow A- and remove it.

Note
Removing
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers, and withdraw
ignition key.
– Remove front left floor covering ⇒ General body repairs, in‐
terior; Rep. gr. 70 ; Interior trim; Removing and installing floor
covering .
– Unclip wiring harness from scuff protection -1- -arrow-.
– Undo and remove bolts -2- for scuff protection -1-.

The camera for night vision system - R212- is located in the ra‐
diator grille.
Removing
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers.
– Keep the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the ignition
from being switched on unintentionally.
– Remove cover ⇒ General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr. 66 ;
Radiator grille/front trim; Assembly overview - radiator grille .
– Release trim for camera for night vision system - R212- -1-

into mounting -4-.
– Insert holding bar on right on front camera for driver assist
systems -1- between retaining clip -2- and mounting -3-.
– Afterwards press holding bar on right of front camera for driver
assist systems -1- downwards until it engages audibly.
• The holding bar on right of front camera for driver assist sys‐
tems -1- has to rest against mounting -5- -arrow-.

found in the exterior mirror.
Note
Removal and installation are described for the left side. For the
right side, the corresponding procedures apply analogously.
Removing
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers, and withdraw
ignition key.

Preparations
• Position vehicle on a firm and level surface.
• Move front wheels to straight-ahead position.
• For vehicles with rear wheel steering, adjust rear wheel steer‐
ing to zero position ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester. This is the only
way to assure that rear wheel steering is in straight-ahead po‐
sition.
• For vehicles without air suspension, suspension was bounced
and rocked several times.
• For vehicles with air suspension, activate “normal level” ⇒
Operating Manual .
• Electromechanical parking brake operated.
• Vehicle exterior lighting switched off.
• All doors of vehicle are closed.
• If necessary, remove sticker with metal foil from bumper cover.
• Connect battery charger for backup power supply ⇒ Electrical
system; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery; Charging battery .
• Before starting calibration/adjustment, read out event memory
and work through all entries displayed.
Procedure
– Check the bolt hole circle pattern on the wheels.
– Secure three appropriate wheel bolt adapters to each wheel
centre mounting - VAS 6350/1A- -1- to match the hole circle.
– Insert measuring paddles -2- in both wheel centre mountings
- VAS 6350/1A- -1- and secure them with clamping bolts.
– Fit wheel centre mountings - VAS 6350/1A- -1- onto wheel
bolts on both rear wheels.
• The turning centre of the wheel centre mounting must be in
the turning centre of the wheel.
– When fitting the wheel centre mountings - VAS 6350/1A- -1-
on the wheels, make sure that none of “anti-theft wheel
bolts” (if applicable) is attached to the wheel centre mounting.
Wheel centre mountings - VAS 6350/1A- -1- are positioned and
secured in the adapters by the “O-rings”.
– Adjust measuring paddles -2- with the help of the clamping
bolts in such a way that they can move freely just above the
floor.
• The measuring paddles -2- must not be restricted in move‐
ment.
• The measuring paddles -2- must be vertical.

The vehicle shown in the illustration may differ from the actual
vehicle.
The display -2- shows how the spacing laser - VAS 6350/2A- must
be applied.
♦ -Arrow 1-: Fit with front edge
♦ -Arrow 3-: Fit with rear edge
– Press the respective button.
– Hold the spacing laser - VAS 6350/2A- -2- for distance meas‐
urement, as shown in the illustration, on one side of the
calibration board flush against stop bracket.
• When doing this, make sure that spacing laser - VAS 6350/2A-
-2- is rests firmly against stop bracket.
– Briefly press the measurement button.
The laser is switched on.
– Ensure that the “laser beam” for distance measurement is at

unit for object detection -J1088- / -J1089- on bumper cover
• Dimension -b- = 1000 ± 10 mm
– For adjusting dimension -b- move calibration board -VAS
6350A- -1- sideways.
• The calibration board -VAS 6350A- -1- must remain parallel
and perfectly aligned.
Calibration process
During the calibration process the following should not occur:
• Within a 2 m radius of the calibration unit, any metallic reflec‐
tors (e.g. workshop trolleys, metal cabinets) must not be
found.
• Vehicle doors should not be opened or closed.
• There should be no-one in the vehicle.
• No-one should pass through the space between the vehicle
and the calibration unit - VAS 6350/4- .
– Connect vehicle diagnostic tester.
– Switch on ignition.
– Use the “guided Fault Finding” or “guided Functions” mode to
select the appropriate programme for calibration/adjustment
⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester:
– Start selected program and follow instructions on display of
vehicle diagnostic tester.
– Upon completion of calibration/adjustment switch off ignition.
– Disconnect vehicle diagnostic tester from diagnostic connec‐
tion.
– Disconnect battery charger ⇒ Vehicle electrics; Rep. gr. 27 ;
Battery; Charging battery .

– Hold the spacing laser - VAS 6350/2A- -2- for distance meas‐
urement, as shown in the illustration, on one side of the
calibration board flush against stop bracket.
• When doing this, make sure that spacing laser - VAS 6350/2A-
-2- is rests firmly against stop bracket.
– Briefly press the measurement button.
The laser is switched on.
– Ensure that the “laser beam” for distance measurement is at
the bottom enlarged part on the measuring paddle -1-.
If this is not the case, adjust height of measuring paddle -1- using
clamping bolt on wheel centre mounting - VAS 6350/1A- .
– Hold spacing laser - VAS 6350/2A- in stop bracket on calibra‐
tion board -VAS 6350A- with one hand while laser beam is
visible on measuring paddle.
– Press measuring button briefly to measure distance.
– Make a note of the displayed value.
– Perform same measuring procedure for rear wheel on other
side of calibration board -VAS 6350A- .
• Measured distance value must be identical on both sides.
– If both measured values are not identical, adjust calibration
board -VAS 6350A- accordingly until the distance values are
identical on both sides.
– When adjusting, make sure that linear laser - VAS 6350/3A-
hits centre of manufacturer badge and spirit level display also
remains centred. If necessary, readjust accordingly.
The display -2- shows how the spacing laser - VAS 6350/2A- must
be applied.

– Press the respective button.

on the vehicle.

– Connect mains plug -A- for calibration unit for night vision as‐
sist - VAS 6430/6- to mains supply.
– Activate switch -B- for calibration unit for night vision assist -

tween the camera for night vision system - R212- and the cali‐
bration unit for night vision assist - VAS 6430/6- .
The yaw and pitch angles of the camera for night vision system -

– Upon completion of calibration/adjustment switch off ignition.
