The following paragraph numbers refer to API STD 677, Third Edition, April, 2006,
which is part of this specification. The text in each paragraph below is an addition unless
noted to be an exception, modification, or deletion to API STD 677. Paragraph numbers
not appearing in API STD 677 are new paragraphs to be inserted in numerical order.
1 General
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This specification, together with the gear unit Data Sheet and Purchase
Order, defines the mandatory requirements for general purpose gear units
rated greater than 300 HP or having a pitch line velocity exceeding
5,000 ft/min (25 m/s). For general purpose gear units below both limits,
manufacturer standards are acceptable in lieu of this specification.
Any deviation from the requirements herein shall follow internal company
procedure SAEP-302.

2 Basic Design
2.1 General
2.1.6 (Modification) Equipment sound pressure levels shall not exceed 85 dBA
when measured, during shop testing at rated speed, from a distance of
one meter. Control of the sound pressure level to meet these requirements
shall be the sole responsibility of the Vendor. External acoustic insulation is
not acceptable.
shall be protected against failure due to windborne seawater spray and the
accumulation of wetted salt (NaCl).
2.5 Casings
2.5.1.4 (Exception) All internal piping and nozzles shall be 316L (weldable)
stainless steel.
2.5.3 Bolting
2.7.4 Shafts
2.7.3.2 (Exception) The total combined electrical and mechanical runout for areas to
be observed by radial vibration sensors shall not exceed:
9 micrometers (0.35 mils) for rated shaft speeds up to 3,600 RPM;
6 micrometers (0.25 mils) for rated shaft speeds exceeding 3,600 RPM.
2.9.1 General
2.9.1.2 On units rated 746 kW (1,000 HP) and above, hydrodynamic thrust and
radial bearings shall be provided with dual bearing metal temperature
sensors, located in the loaded areas of the bearings and installed in
accordance with 34-SAMSS-625. On bearings for units rated less than
746 kW (1,000 HP), bearing shell thermocouple connected to temperature
indicating transmitters shall be provided.
2.10 Lubrication
2.10.6 (Exception) The gear unit shall be designed to limit the maximum lube oil
temperature rise to 30°C with an oil inlet temperature of 60°C.
2.10.9 The lube oil system shall be supplied by the Vendor having unit
responsibility for the equipment train.
2.10.10 Unless otherwise specified in the Data Sheet of units with hydrodynamic

2.10.11 Normally, the lube oil system is not in the scope of the gear Vendor's supply.

3.4.2.1 For gear units equipped with hydrodynamic bearings and rated 746 kW
(1,000 HP) or above, a shaft relative displacement (non-contacting) sensor
shall be installed at each rotor, on coupling side radial bearings of input and
output rotors. Additionally, dual axial position sensors shall be installed at
each thrust bearing. Vibration detectors, shaft axial-position transducers and
bearing temperature detectors shall comply with 34-SAMSS-625.
4.1 General
4.2 Inspection
4.2.2.1 General
4.2.2.1.1 Finish machined surfaces and casing welds shall be liquid penetrant
examined.
4.2.3.1 All welds, including those attaching gears to shafts, shall receive 100% wet
fluorescent magnetic particle inspection.
4.3 Testing
4.4.1 (Modification) any rust preventative used shall be oil soluble. The gearbox
and any spare rotors shall be preserved at site by immersion in oil (the gearbox
and the spare rotors containers shall be filled with oil). The gearbox shall be
supplied with a vent valve to remove trapped air while filling, and the drain
shall be blinded with a gasket and stainless steel blind with full flange bolting.
